Beit known that I, ODAvILLe YATEs, a citi- Zen ot the United States, residing at Portland, in the county oi' Multnomah and State el Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Relillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to non-relillable bottles, and has ior its object to provide a bottle et this character with an improved valve-con trolling mechanism which will hold the valve seated and prevent discharge` oi' the contents when the bottle is disposed in a horizontal or tilted position, it being necessary to entirely invert the bottle to dispense the liquid there in, and thus the bottle cannot be refilled.
The invention further consistsin the de tailed construction,combination,and operative aggroupment oi the parts, all as will be more fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the acconipanying drawings, and lnally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the neck and upper end o1I the body ot' the bottle with my improved valve mechanism mounted therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bottle with the valve mechanism mounted therein and with the detachable neck and guard for the valve mechanism removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the bottle tilted to an almost inverted position. Fig. 4C is a side elevation oi the valve mechanism.
Making renewed reference to the drawings, '1 designates the body of the bottle, having its upper end formed with an' integral upstand ing and inwardly-directed liange 2, the edges of which are provided with diametrically-disposed recesses 3 3. Beneath the {iange and extending about one-fourth way therearound are inclined circumferential segments 41, which are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The Vliange 2 is surrounded by a-marginal annular recess 2, into which the overlapping edge 10 of a detachable neck 8 lits. This detachable neck isprovided with the usual bore 5,which may be closed by a stopper 6 at the upper end, and in its lower end is `formed an annular chamber 7. Depending from the bottom of the dcl tachable neck and separated 'from the overlap 50 ping edge 10 thereof are lugs i), that have outwardly-disiiiosed noses 11, adapted to be inserted into the recesses 3 in the flange Q and engaged beneath the inclined segments a. Then the neck is attached and given apartialrotation,tl1c upper edges o1 the noses o1" the lugs engage with the inclined surface o1l the segments 41 and bind the neck down with the overlapping edge 10 into intimate contact with the annular recess E2, and, i1I desired, any suitable cement or plastic material may be previously inserted in the annular space 12, which is sur' rounded by the flange 2, and ot' course when the lugs S) and prevents removal of the neck.

This vertical Vflange extends partially up into the chamber 7 in the detachable neck and supports the valve mechanism 141, which consists ol'l a cap 115, that lits over thefiange 1&3 and from which depends a trame 16, the lower end olE which is secured to a controller-casing 17. The cap 115 may be irictionally held upon the [lange 13 or it may be attached by piercing the lianged end .18 with tacks or other lfastenings, and its top is perforated to provide a port 19, and the edges o1' the metal around the port are ol'liset to provide a \/alve-seat 2() `for the valve 21. The side pieces of the frame are braced at several points by cross-bars 22 and Q3, through which the valve-stein 24 passes to lorm guides for said stein, which is jointed at 25 and has on its lower end a weight 2G. The top of the casing 17 is perforated, as at 27, so as to permit the joint ol' the valve-stem to tree] y slide therethrough when the valve opens and closes. On the valve-stem, below the joint thereof, is a controller-disk 8, which is inclosed by the casing 17 and free to oscillate and reciprocate therein when the weighted end of the valve-stem is tilted out oi alinement with the stationary portion thereof, as will be further explained in the statement ol the operation.

When the bottle has been filled, the valve mechanism 14 is positioned in place by inserting the cap 15 over the flange 13, and the detachable neck is then applied, as before stated. The weight 26 on the end of' the valve-stem will normally hold the valve seated and prevent the further introduction of liquid into the bottle; but by entirely inverting the bottle the weig'ht will f'orce the valve from its seat and the liquidwill then pass through the space between the top of the casing 17 and the bottom of the flange 13 and into the space occupied by the frame, through the port 19, around the guard, and out of the neck, as indicated by the arrows. However, the peculiar construction of the parts associated with the valve and its casing is such as to prevent the former from being' unseated unless the bottleis entirely inverted, in which position it would be impossible to refill the bottle, inasmuch as access cannot be had to the valve by an instrument on account of' the guard, and any force sufiicient to inject a liquid into the bottle in this inverted position would also be suflicient-to close the valve, which would then act as a check-valve, and, furthermore, such operation would be attended with more or less inconvenience in view of the air in the bottle and the back pressure of` the liquid through the port, which is only open when the bottle is inverted. From Fig. 3 it will be seen that when the bottle is tilted either to a horizontal position or to a position at an acute angle with the true horizontal the weight 26 will cause the valve-stem to break joint, and the controller-disk, which is rigid on said stem, will act as a f'ulcrum in the casing 17, the f'ulcrumpoint being' at one side ofl the joint in the valve-stern, and thereby causing a direct pull on the valve-stem, which will hold the valve seated until the center of gravity is overcome by entirely inverting the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is4
1. ln anon-refillable bottle, abod'y provided with an upstanding flange, a cap fittingover said fiange and having a valve-seat in the top thereof', a frame depending from said cap, a casing secured to the lower end of said frame, a valve to close the seat, a jointed valve-stem piercing the said frame and the casing with the jointthereof adjacent to the top ofsaid casing, a weight on the lower end of the valve-stem, and a controller-disk on the valve-stem below the joint thereof and loosely confined within said casing, whereby the edge of' said disk acts as a fulcrum within the casing to exert a pull upon the valve-stem when the bottle is tilted.
2. In a bottle of' the class described, the combination of a body portion having an upstanding inwardly-directed annular flange provided with inclined segments, adetachable neck having depending lugs to engage the inclined face of said segments and also having an annular chamber in the lower end thereof', a vertical flange on the top of the body portion projectingpartially within the chamber of` the neck, a valve mechanism having acap fitted over said last-mentioned iange and provided with a valve-seat in its top, an annular' sheath projecting from the top of said cap and inclosing the valve, a guard above said sheath, a frame depending f'rom said cap, a casing secured to the lower end of' said frame, a valve normally held seated on the top of said cap, a jointed valvestem projecting through the frame and casing, a weight on the lower jointed end of` the valvestem,and a controller-disk secured to the valvestem below the joint thereof and adapted tov have a fulcrum within the casing' when the weight f'alls to one side by the tilting of the bottle, whereby the valve will be held seated when the bottle is tilted, substantially as specir fied.
