SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,865, dated February' 28, 1905.
Application led November 11, 1903. Serial No. 180,742.
Be it known that I, A'Lois HLA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Pilsen, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Motors; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and ein act description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to a rotary steam or like motor.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the motor, taken on the I5 lines I I and II II of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken' on the lines III III and IV IV of Fig. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection on the lines V V and V1 VI of Fig. 2. Figs. f1 to 15 show details to he hereinafter 2O referred to.
The motor consists of the steain-cylinder a, provided with covers Z1 and steam-regulat ing chambers c c', of the shaft 7, slide c, valve g, and governor Frein either side of the motor two passages 1 1 and 2 2 conduct freni the steai'n-ehanibers c c into the steam-cylinder a, Figs. 1 to 3, 6, 7, for the live-steam supply and for exhaust, respectively. Each of the upper passages 1 1 branches into two,
channels leading from the body of the cylinder to the covers 7) 7) and entering the chamher of the cylinder' at 3 and 3' adjacent to the slide e. These passages remain open for permanent supply of steam, the latter being 3 5 regulated by slide-valves f1 and L1 in the stean1- chambers c c'. The lower passages 2 2 likei wise lhifurcate into two channels, which enter the cylinder-chamber at 5 and and are closed hy valves 6 and 6 in the steam-chambers.
In the steam-cylinder c is a working' meinher d, Figs. 1 to 3, 8 to 12, keyed tothe shaft 7 and comprising a cylinder 8 and a flange or ring consisting ol." two separate sectors 9 and El', of which the one is located at one end of the cylinder and the other one at the opposite end in such manner that they stand at an angle of one hundred and eighty degrees rela tive to each other. rIhese two sectors 9 9 are connected with each other by screw-blades 10 and 10Q of which the one, 10, is right-hand- 50 ed and the other, 10', left-handed.
Figs. 8 to lOshow side elevations of the member Z with its flange in three different positions. Fig. 11 shows an end elevation of the same. and Fig. 12 a section on the line VIII VIII of Fig. 8.
The slide e, Figs 1, 2, 13 to 15, has the forni of a long plate and is with one of its narrow sides, 11, always hearing against the surface of the cylinder 8, Figs 1, 8 to 10. It is provided at the center with a recess 12, in which the flange of the cylinder 8 engages, so that the slide is moved positively to and fro. At either side of the recess 19 are jaws 13 13', pressed against the iiange of the cylinder t3 Vby springs 14 for the purpose of making' tight joints. The slide c is pressed against the cylinder 8 by theplate 15, which again is under the influence o1 the spring 16. The jaws are ehanifered at their inner inner edges, so that the surfaces 17 lie against the sectors and the inclined faces 17' against the screw-blades.
The valve y, Figs, 1 to 5, consists of a casing 18,` to which four pipes are holtedmviz., the pipe 19 with valve 20 for the steam-supply, the pipes 21 and 21' connecting the valve g/ with the steam-chambers c c, and finally the exhaust-pipe 22. Inside the casing 18 is a conical valve-body 23, having two chambers and mounted on a spindle. 'Ihe valve-body can be adjusted in three different positions wt, n, and o for the various steaxnways. ln the position wt the steani-sinfiply is cutolf. In position a steam enters the pipe 21, and in position o steam enters the pipe 21.
The speed of lthe motor is controlled by the governor ri, driven from the shaft 7 by means of pulleys 211 and cord 25.
26 is a sliding sleeve to which is connected the double arm 27, which by means of rods work the slide-valves l1 il', which close and open the passages 1 1 After openingl of the valve r/ into the position a steam enters the pipe 21 and chamber c, and from here through the passage 1 and the two holes 3 at the side of the slide e into the steam-cylinder. The steam cannot escape through the passage 2, as the valve (5 is forced down by the live steam above. The steam reaches the cylinder 8 and enters the chambers s and s, Fig. 8, which arel enlarged by the steam-pressure, and thus set the cylinder 8 in rotation. The steam-supply passages are closed at the proper moment and the chambers filled with steam arrive at the other side of the slide, where the steam commences to rush out through the holes 5f and passage 2 into the steam-chamber c. When this passage 2/ no longer suffices, the exhaust-steam also flows through the passage 1. From the steamchamber c' the exhaust-steam fiows through the pipe 21 in-to the valve g and into the exhaust-pipe 22 in the direction of the arrows t. According to Fig. 8, where the slide divides the two steam-chambers r s into two parts, the steam enters from the side .5' and s' and escapes at /1' and r and the cylinder rotates in the direction of the arrow o. According to Fig. 9 the sector 9 enters between the surfaces 17 of the jaws 13 and 13 and remains in this position also in Fig. 10, where the steam only exerts pressure in the chamber s, since the passage 3 is closed against the chamber s by the sector 9. On further rotation of the screwblade lO a new chamber s is formed and the steam-pressure commences to act again in it, so that there can never be a dead-point, and is always at least one chamber between the slide and the screw-blades filled with live steam and capable of acting. Should the direction of the motor have to be reversed, the valvebody 23 must be turned into the position o, so that the steam enters through the chamber c into the chambers fr and 7" and the cylinder turns in the reverse direction. The exhaust-steam enters the chamber c and passing through thc pipe 2l leaves at 22. There is thus always one steam-chamber serving for the steam-supply and the other for the exhaust, or vice versa.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
