APPARATUS FOR DRAWING OFF BEER FROM BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,813, dated February '7, 1905.

Be it known that I, Josnrn Dnnarrrnn, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at La toconniere, Laval, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Drawing Off Beer from Barrels, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.
The object of this draw-otl' is to entirely prevent t'rothing, the beer passing from the barrel into the bottles without any depression. For this purpose the counter-pressu re in the cylinder and bottles is no longer produced'by the beer, but by a liquid termed the compensating liquid, (glycerinated water.) As the beer does not froth, two cocks instead of tour or six are amply sutlicient, and the operator is enabled to etl'ect the drawing off while seated. Finally, the cocks, which are very simple and strong and easily operated, are completed by an apparatus for automatically drawing otl' the froth. The nozzles of thecocks are provided with an inverted-cone trunk made of flexible india-rubber, which elfects a junction with all the bottle-necks even when the latter are indented.
In order that the object of the invention may he understood. it is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a front and a side view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, on a larger scale, of one of the distribnting-cocks; Fig. l, a transverse section of the same; Fig. 5, a view of the same from below; Fig. 6, an end view of the same on the side where the machine is worked; Fig. T, a view in detail of the means of working the screens: Fig. 8, a detail view ot' the means of working the distributing-cocks combined with that of the screens.
The machine thus illustrated is composed of a cast-iron table a and two frames 6. Through this table run the rods 0 of two platforms (Z, movable in guides. Each platform is raised by a counterweighted lever 1 the end of which enters a slotin the guide. These platforms,

These cocks, which have conical plugs and are screwed up more or less tightly by a nut? and a washer n, Fig. 5, have two passages of unequal diameter running through them. The one w, of six to seven millimeters in diameter. conveys the beer through the junction situated behind the column and through the interior of the arms which support the cocks. The compressed-air tubes r are extended. as mentioned above. by the passages x, which are divided in the plug of the cock into two oblique passages connected by another passage 11*, and thus forming a triangle. The base 1/ of this triangle is in constant commnnication with the pipes, while the apex of the triangle is alternately in communication with an apparatus for drawing otl' foam and with the bottle to be tilled. Under this arrangement the compressed air enters the empty bottles well in advance of the beer, and as soon as the air and the beer meet in the bottles the passages in the plug of the cock communicate with pipes .r, which lead to a three-way cock .1 and the outlet-opening of which is also t'urnished with an india-rubber cone. against which the neck of a bottle 1 (its and into which the froth is discharged. Screens 0 are arranged vertically between the platforms (Z and the distributing-cocks, their opening and closing being effected simultaneously, but inversely with the opening and closing of the cocks g and by the simple operation of the levers .2 described. For this purpose the bottom of each of the connectingrods forms a projection a on which a lever 2" rests, the end of which opposite to the pivot is raised by a belt cl, which passes over a pulley (Z and thence around a pulley e, the axis f of which is the pivot of the corresponding screen. From this pulley the belt passes over a second vertical pulley g and supports a counterweight 7a, Fig. 7,

Action: From the foregoing it will be seen that the compressed gas must first be conveyed from the generating-receptacle, which is independent of the machine, into the reservoir 7'. Under its action the compensating liquid rises in the cylinder m, raises the float, and forms in the upper part of the cylinder a second air-chamber, the pressure of this air being lower than that of the generating vessel by the whole weight of the column of liquid between i and m. The compressed air in the cylinder creates the counter-pressure in the empty bottles through the pipes 1' and the passages 1.0 in the cocks. The beer in turn. reaches the bottles, and as it is forced by the same compressed-gas receptacle as the com-, pensating liquid and has less distance to ascend than the latter itdrives the air contained in the bottles before it, fills the bottles, and
if the closing of the cocks be not effected rises again in the pipes r only up to the level of the float 22. hen the quantity of air forced out of the bottles into the cylinder becomes too large, the compensating liquid sinks with the float p, which then allows the excess of air to escape through the orifice q. In an apparatus of the character described, the combinationof a supportingframe, a lower receptacle containing a liquid as described, an upper cylinder with which the lower receptacle is in communication, an outlet in the upper cylinder, a float adapted to close the said outlet, pipes 9 leading from the upper cylinder, a distributing-cock having passages with which the pipes 9' communicate, the said passages having the triangular arrangement described, said cock also having the passage o, a pipe communicating with the passages having the triangular arrangement, and means for operating the distributingcock.
2. In an apparatus of.the character described, the combination of a supportingframe, a lower receptacle containing a liquid as described, an upper cylinder with which the lower receptacle is in communication, an outlet in the upper cylinder, a float adapted to close said outlet, pipes 1* leading from the upper cylinder, distributing-cocks having passages with which the pipes 1' communicate and having the triangular arrangement described, said cocks also having each a passage 1., pipes :11 communicating with the passages having the triangular arrangement, and a cock 00 with which pipes to communicate.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a supportingframe, a lower receptacle containing a liquid as described, an upper cylinder with which the lower receptacle is in communication, an outlet in the upper cylinder, a float adapted to close said outlet, pipes 0* leading from the upper cylinder, distributing=cocks having passages with which the pipes 1' communicate and having the triangular arrangement described, said cocks also having each a passage 0, pipes communicating with the passages having the triangular arrangement, and a cock at" with which pipes w communicate, the verticallymovable platforms (Z and counterweighted levers carrying the platforms.
