Be it known that I, PAYNE P. STURDEVANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, Passaic county, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which* Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a mining-car constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
This invention relates to side dumping-cars, and more particularly to a mining-car the body of which is adapted to dump from either side.
One oi' the objects of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, durable, and ellicient car which will possess the requisite strength and ease of manipulation.
Another object is to provide an improved body for the car, together with an efcient underframing. I
.Other objects and advantages, as well as the novel details of construction of this in vention, will be more specilically described hereinafter, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without de parting from the spirit of the invention or sacrilicing any of the advantages thereof.
The side sills of the car are designated by the reference-numeral 1, and they consist of channels connected bythe channel end sills 2, the flanges of the respective side and end sills being turned outwardly and the side sills being provided at their lower edges with inwardly-disposed flanges forming part of the angles 3, which angles are riveted to the webs of the channel side sills, so that the flanges thereof are in approximately the same plane as the plane of the lower flange or' each side sill.
The inwardly and outwardly disposed iianges carried by the side sills form supports to which the journalboxes are secured, said journal-boxes L being tied in by the longitudinally-disposed tie-rods 5, secured to the bottoms of the journal-boxes and having their ends twisted so that they may be secured to the webs or' the side sills. The channel center sill 7 is connected to a longitudinally-disposed angle center brace 8, the lateral flange of which is fastened to the top iiange ot' the center sill, the ends of the center brace extending upwardly to points adjacent to the end transverse braces 9, which are approximately inverted-V-shaped in cross-section and which consist of channels bent into shape, the webs oi' which are secured to the webs of the side sills.
Secured beneath the apex of each transverse brace 9 is a bearing 10, through which the bearing-bolts 11 pass, which bolts alsov pass through the bifurcated portion of the castings l2, secured to the channel central bracing' member 13 of the body. This channel bracing member is bentinto approximately U-shaped form, the upstanding ends 14 comprising supports for the end sheets 15 of the car.
The continuous floor-sheet 16 is flanged at its respective ends and is secured to the ends of the car and to the channel central members by means ot' rivets. The side edges of the licor-sheet 16 are provided with angles 17, having depending' flanges to which the ilexible bracing devices 18 are secured. The opposite end of the bracing devices 18 are connected to the top flange of the side channels 1. Angles 17 constitute part of the vertical angles 19, comprising the end posts of the car, to add rigidity to the body, the top of each end being also provided with angles, as indicated at 20.
21 designates the side doors, which consist of plates having top and bottom chords, (designated by the numerals 22 and 23, which side doors may be secured to the car in any suit able manner. The intermediate pins 24 are for the purpose of separating the members of the flexible braces 18, so that the car may be dumped from either side.
By constructing the car as above described practically the entire strain on the body Will be communicated to the U-shaped-angle center brace 13, which, being supported by the braces 9, will communicate the Weight of the load to the braces, which in turn will distribute it over the underf'raming.
It Will be observed that the entire car, with the exception of the journal-boxes,Wheels, and castings, may be constructed of| commercial channels, angles, and plates at a minimum cost, While affording a maximum amount of strength and durability.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A car-body having a channel center sill with upturned ends to support the ends of the car, castings secured to the web of the channel center sill and pivoted to the underf'raming; substantially as described.
2. A car-body having a channel center sill With upturned ends to support the end sheets of' the car, and means for pivotally supporting the center sill above the underf'raming; substantially as described.
3. A car having a center sill with depending flanges, upstanding ends carried by the center sill with outwardly-disposed flanges, an underframing, and means for pivoting the center sill to the underframing; substantially as described.
4. A car-body having depending flanges, an underframing to which the body is pivoted and having channel side sills, and flexible bracing devices connected to the flanges of the channel side sills and the depending flanges of' the car-body; substantially as described.
5. A mining-car having an underframing of' channel side sills and end sills connecting' them, transverse channel-braces connected to the side sills and bent into approximately invert1 ed-V shapes, a channel center sill pivoted to the apices ofl the braces, said channel center sill having' upstanding ends; substantially as described.
6. A car comprising side sills and end sills, approximately inverted-V-shaped braces connected to the side sills, a center sill for sup porting the car-body and having upstanding ends, and castings connected to the center sill and carried by the braces; substantially as described.
7. A car comprising side sills and end sills, cross-braces carried by the side sills, a carbody center sill having upstanding ends, and means for pivoting the center sill to the braces; substantially as described.
8. A car having side sills comprising channels with outwardly-dispcsed flanges, center sills, end sills connecting the center sills to the side sills, angles connected to the webs of,` the side sills and having inwardly-disposed flanges, and liournal-boxes connected to the flanges ofthe channels and angles; substantially as described.
9. A car comprising side sills with out- Wardly-disposed flanges, center sills, ond sills connecting the center sills to the side sills, angles connected to the webs of the side sills and having inwardly-disposed flanges, journalboxes connected to the flanges of the channels and angles, and a tying-in rod connected to the Webs of the side sills and extending be` neath the journal-boxes; substantially as described.
