METALLEG TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,269, dated January 3, 1905.
Application filed September 9,1904. Serial No. 223,822,
T0 ail whom if m!! concern:
it known that i, J nssn J. Evans, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at (xlassport, in the county of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic ties, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby rails may be secured to the ties, dispensing with the use of spikes, chairs, clamps, and the like.
The present invention has for its object to provide a metallic tie formed of two like sections which may be easily rolled and securely fastened together for the purpose hereinbeforc designated,
My invention still further contemplates to provide a metallic rair-fastener which will be extremely simple in construction, strong, du-
rable, comparatively inexpensive to manufaei ture, and highly eiiicient in its use.
With the above and other objects the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and par ticularly pointed out in the claims.
in describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of'this application, and wherein i like numerals of reference indicate l ke parts throughout the several views, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tie, showing a pair of rails secured thereto, the latter being illustrated in section. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of my improved tie. Fig. 3 is an end View of a pair of ties, showing the raii in sideelevation.
In the drawings the rails are represented by numerais 1, and the tie-sections are designated by reference-numerais 2 3. These tieseetions are of the channel-bar construction and are secured together so as to forma reinforcing-web portion 4 and out\vardly-extend ing base-flanges 5 .5 and tread-flanges 6 6. The tread-flanges 6 are sheared, as shown at 7, forming fastening-lugs 8, which serve to secure and partially embrace the base of the rail. An opening is formed through the web 4., as shown at 9, for the reception of a key 10, having an opening 11 formed therein for the reception of a locking-wedge 12.
it will be noted that the base-flanges 5 are of greater width than the tread-flanges 6 of the tie and that by this manner a more substantial and cheaper construction is obtained than by employing an I-lwam. Furthernwre, the rails are fastened in such a manner as will permit the same to expand and contract.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved construction will be readily apparent from the foregoing dcseriptiomtaken in connection with the accompanying dravings.
it will further be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.v
Having fully descrihedmy invention, what i claim as new, and desire to sccu re by Letters Patent, is-
1. in a metallic tie, the combination of simiiar channel bars, the l. ase-flange being of greater Width than the tread-tlange, means to secure said channel-bars together, and lugs sheared from the said tread-flange extending to the sides thereof, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. in a metallic tie, the combination of two channel-bars, each having a horizontal treadflange at its upper edge and a horizontalbaseflange at its lower edge, said bars being provided with registering openings in their Webs, keys passing through said openings, locking-Wedges passing through said keys and means carried by said tread-flanges for securing rails thereto.
3. in a metallic tie, the combination of two connected channel-bars placed with their web portions in contact and constituting an I-bearn, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature'in "said web portions being formed with registhe presence of two witnesses.
tering openings, keys passing through said 1 w Y openings, lockingwedges p lssing through J hbbE LVAh said keys, said channel-bars being each formed Witnesses:
with lugs sheared from the upper flange there- H. C! EVER'I,
of, extending to the edge of the flange. 7 Emma DUNLM.
