PATENT OFFICE.
SEAL-LOOK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 779,032, dated January 3, 1905.
Appli ation filed March '7, 1904. Serial No. 196,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN R. DRAUDT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Gleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Seal-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of seal-locks for pipe-joints; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction of seal-lock adapted to embrace and prevent access "to the joints of pipes connecting with gas or water meters or other similar measuring devices and to so construct my improved lock as to admit of its being readily and conveniently applied to a pipe-joint and so locked in connection therewith as to prevent the same being disconnected without breaking the seal or body of the lock. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved lock and joint casing. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation at right angles with that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 00 w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the united lug or lip portions of the sections of my device with the locking-key retion therein and in an unlocked position. Fig.
6 is a similar view showing the key in its locked position; and Fig. 7 is a detail view, in elevation, of the key which I employ in the manner hereinafter described.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a joint-casing comprising two half-cylindrical sections 1 and 2, each of which is of a concavoconvex form in cross-section, these two sections when brought together forming a band or boxing which is adapted to incase a pipejoint and which owing to the concavo-convex form of its sections is prevented from movement on said pipe. The section 2 is provided adjacent to one of its ends with an outwardly- A inclined yoke-like projection or keeper 2", with 3, as shown.
1, said sections being thus hinged one to the other. The section 1 at its opposite side is provided with a laterally-projecting lip or lug 3, through which is formed a central opening 4., said lip or lug having an outer edge flange The section 2 is likewise provided on that side which is opposite the keeper 2 with a laterally-projecting lip 5 of such size as to enter or fit within the flange 3 of the lug or lip 3 when the sections 1 and 2 are brought together. Through the lug or lip 5 is formed transversely a keyhole-shaped opening 6, and adjacent to and on one side of the smaller end of said opening said lip or lug is provided with a projecting stop-lug 7, the latter being of equal height with the side wall or flange of said lug 5. I also form on the inner face of the lug 5 and on the same side thereof as that occupied by the lug 7 a projecting stud 8, and opposite said lug 8 the wall or edge flange of the lip 5 is recessed, as indicated at 9. Between the stud 8 and the recessed wall of the lip 5 is interposed, as shown, a curved or centrally-bent strip 10, preferably of spring material, one of the inclined end portions of the latter terminating Within the lug 7 11 represents a combined seal and lockingkey, which comprises a disk-like body, from one side of which projects a rounded and flattened seal-head 12 and from the opposite side of which projects a key-stem 13, the base of Which is formed With a lateral Wing or projection 13. The key-stem 13 in its outer portion is formed on one side, which is at right angles with the direction of the length of the Wing or projection 13, With a lug 1 1.
The manner of utilizing my improved lock and key is as follows: The sections 1 and 2 being brought together about the pipe-joint the stem 13 and the wing 13 of the key 11 are inserted through the keyhole-shaped opening 6 of the section-lip '5. When thus inserted, the key is turned in thedirection indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5 until the extremity of the wing 13 contacts with and passes that end of the spring-strip 10 which is adjacent to the lug 7 The wing having passed the end of said spring-strip and the latter having been depressed thereby, it is obvious that the strip will return to its normal position, thereby causing its end to engage one side of the wing 13, the opposite side of said wing abutting against the lug 7 In this manner the key is firmly locked in its position and prevented from rotation in either direction. In constructing the stem portion 13 of the key I preferably form the same adjacent to the wing 13 with opposing notches or recesses 15, the latter serving to weaken the stem at that point, and thereby providing for the breaking of the key-stem when it is desired to unlock the sections.
From the construction and operation which I have described it will be seen that when the locking-key is in the position shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings the key is prevented from being Withdrawn through the keyhole 6, owing to the engagement of the lug 14 with the outer side of the lip 3, and that the contact of the spring-strip and wing of said key prevents the latter from being turned to a removable position.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a seal-lock, the combination of the hinged sections 1 and 2, said section 1 having a projecting lip 3 formed with an opening therethrough and said section 2 having a lip 5 formed with a keyhole-shaped opening, said lip also having a lug or shoulder 7 and a springstrip held adjacent thereto, of a key comprising a body 11 and a stem portion 13, the latter having a laterally-projecting wing 15 and lug 14.
I BENJAMIN R. DRAUDT.
