The barrel A is made of glass and is provided at its upper end with an outwardly-extending flange B and at its lower end is provided with an inwardly-extending flange C, forming a central aperture D. An externallythreaded tubular nipple E, provided with a head F, is passed through the aperture D, and v a washer Gr is placed against the under side of said head, which washer rests on the upper surface of the internal flange G. If desired, a washer H may be placed on the lower erlid 13f the barrel A around the threaded nipp e A cap J, adapted to receive the lower end of the barrel A, is provided with a central screwthreaded aperture 1, into which the end of the nipple projecting beyond the end of the barrel can be screwed, so that when the said cap is screwed up tight the washer G is pressed upon the inner surface of the lower end of the barrel and the barrel drawn firmly into the cap J, and if the bottom washer H is used the same is firmly pressed against the lower end of the barrel A.
The piston-rod K is provided at its lower end with a head or annular flange L, on which the tubular pistonpacking M, of cork, rubber, leather, asbestos, or other material, can rest, and the upper end of the piston-rod is provided with the screw-threaded end N, which can be screwed into the handle part 0,

and on its upper end the lower end of the handle head or part 0 rests. When said handle head or part 0 is screwed down, it presses the glass tube P lengthwise, and this tube press ing on the packing M spreads the same more or less, as may be desired or necessary. The
operator can thus at any time spread the packing as necessity may require.
The graduations on the piston-rod K can readily be read through the glass barrel and the glass tube P.
A hypodermic needle of any desired style, pattern, or make can be screwed on the projecting end of the nipple E.
To take the syringe apart, the cap J is first unscrewed. The nipple E and its head F are removed by reversing the barrel after the piston has been withdrawn, the washer H, in case the same has been used, having been first withdrawn, the nipple and its head dropping out of the barrel. Then the handle part of head 0 is unscrewed from the piston-rod and the glass tube P and the packing M are removed from the piston-rod. All parts are thus separated and detached and can be cleaned and disinfected and can then be readily reassembled in the reverse order of the steps described above.
In case it is desired to attach handles or holding devices on the barrel an externallythreaded ring R is slipped on the barrel A from below until it rests against the top external flange B, and a cap S is screwed on this ring, the cap resting on the flange B. The cap has a hole T of sufficient size for the glass piston-tube P to pass through, but not the packing M when the latter is spread. Rings W or arms, the latter shown in clotted lines, project from the said cap S and serve for holding the barrel while forcing the piston in or out. After the cap S has been unscrewed the ring R can be readily slipped off the barrel.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A syringe having a glass barrel, a needleholding nipple held detachably within the barrel, through which cap said nipple is projected, substantially as set forth.
3. In a syringe, the combination with a piston-rod, having a head on its lower end,
and having its upper end threaded, of a packing resting on said head, a tube surrounding the piston-rod and resting on said packing, and a handle-head screwed on the upper end of the piston-rod and resting on said tube, substantially as set forth.
