Description

CHRISTIAN WOLF, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.l
Letters .Patent No. 77,698, dated May 5, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-GOLLARS.4
@te ''ttetnlt teintes tt'iu this @their @that zum' uniting ritt si tige smits TO A IfL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN WQLF, of Danville, in the county of Vermillion, and in the Stato of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful, Improvements in IzIorsc-Cellars; and do hereby declare that thc following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to thc accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon'. v l l -In the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this-specification, A A represent the sides of a collar, which are made entirely of wood, andin shape to exactly fit the'neckand shoulders of, a horse or other like animal,
substantially as shown inthe drawings. At the top and o`utside of the said p'ieces'orfsidesl A'A, I secure, by
means of screws passing nearly Vthrough the wood of the collar, suitable metallic plates B B, provided withl suitable loopsor buckles'at their upper extremity, through which a haines -or collar-strap, C, may pass. The strap C may be fastened in the usual and ordinary manner, but I makeit four double by passing through the lops, and thereby Ifasten the upper ends of the sides A of v my collar togethers Underneath .the strap C, I secure a pad, D,'so as to protect the top of the neel: of the animal from galling or cutting by the' said strap C. This pad i guide for the driving-reins, Y
is secured or held in place by means'of a common leather loop, through which the'strap C passes,'and the'edges thereofare kept from curling enrolling` under, by means of small metallichooks or catches, which are made.
pointed, and then pressed through the material of said pads, and then bent or doubled over.
The line-rings or loops represented hy E, in the drawings, areinser'ted--throughthe straps ermctallic plates B,-and.screwed into the .collar A, andthereby assist-in seeuring 'said- 'plateraswellas furnishing .therequir'ed F F represent metallic straps or plates, provided ,with 'suitable slots or loops, to which the liooks, links, or harness-tugs are attached in any convenientvmanner. Said strapslilextend from the front of the inside of the collar A, andarourid the fronti-thereof, and secured thereto bylneans of screws, which extend nearlyv through the wood of the collar, so as to not only fasten said plates that they-cannot become loose, but' strengthen the material and prevent its'splitting. The stapleswhich holdthe holdvhack rings are screwed through said plates,
, as is fully shown.
H H'represent metallic straps, at the lower ends of the sides of the'collar, of similar construction with the straps or plates B B, provided with suitable. loops or buckles, in which the hames or col larstrap or fastening is secured. The straps H H are secured by screws, as the strapsor plates B and F, or by nicely-finished boltsv passing entirely through the material ot' th-sides A A. For my h ames' or collarffast'ening, I secure, in'the loop of one side of tho collar A or. its strap H, a metallic hanged or grooved guide or plate, I, as shown in the drawings. Said guide is curved -on its-upper side, so as to .correspond wlth'theishape desired togive the lower end of the collar. Between the sid or flanges of the guide '1, I vpivot a small leveror pawl-,"j, which is provided with a lip or projection on itsupper side-to catch in the teethofthe plate or ratchet-bar K, The pawlj is also pro =vided with a groove .or notch across itsvlower side, over which is placed'a bolt or rod, x, so that it may work out and in only as far as may be required4 to attach and detach the'sume to'.or from theratchet K.
A small spring, z, is pivoted in front of the pawl'j,one end nesting against thcback' thereof to k'eep it in place, and the otherfend restingon a suitable pin across thc guide I, as is shown.
K represents a metallic ber or plate, curved' so as to correspond with the shape of upper side of the guide I, andl having a sericsof notches or .teeth on its lower side, in which the lip of the pawlj catches, and thereby secures-or fastcns the collar to or on the animal. v
Having thus fully described'my ipvention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Icttcrs Patent, is'- The arrangement of'a. wooden collar, A, having the straps or. plates B, F, und I-I, rim-guide E, and holdback rings secured toit, as` described, with the rntchetfb'ar K, guide I, pnw'l j, lund spring L, all the parts being constructed and'used asand for the purpose speciiitnl.` Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 14th day of February, i868.
' l CHRISTIAN WOLF.
