ADJUSTABLE CURTAIN-POLE.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. FAWOETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Curtain- Poles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable curtain-poles; and the object thereof is to provide a means whereby the pole may be lowered and elevated to permit the curtain being removed and replaced without the use of a chair or ladder.

In the accompanying drawings I haveshown my improvements as applied to a window, in which drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2,-a sectional side elevation; and Fig. 3, a plan view of a portion thereof, partly shown in section.

My invention consists of a pair of rods 1, vertically disposed and fixed at their ends to the window-frame, each of which rods has formed near its upper and lower end a notch 2 and is provided with a slidable sleeve 3. Pivotally attached to each of said sleeves is a bracket 4 for supporting the pole 5, said brackets each being provided with a braceleg 6, the ends of which brace-legs engage normally in the notches at the upper ends of the vertically-disposed members, as shown. Attached to an eyelet 7 on each of said brackets is a cord 8, which passes through a screweye 9 thereabove on the window-frame and hangs down along the window-frame, where they may be conveniently reached by the operator.

When it is desired to lower the pole, the operator grasps the cords and gives them a quick pull, at the same time slightly slackening up the cords sufficient to disengage the braces from the notches, when the brackets carrying the pole may be lowered until the said bracelegs engage in the notches in the lower extremities of the vertical members, at which point the pole is convenient for either taking off or replacing the curtain, as the case may be. WV hen desired, the pole may easily be returned to its normal elevated position by simply pulling upon the cords until the desired elevation has been reached, when a slackening of the cords will cause the bracket-legs to automatically engage in the notches, which is due to the weight of the pole carried at the bracket ends.

It is apparent thata number of notches may be made in the vertical members near the top for various elevations or they may be extended to the bottom without departing from the spirit of my invention.

This apparatus is not only simple in operation and application, but may be made at nominal cost.

Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In ,a vertically-adjustable curtain-pole, the combination with the window-frame of a pair of vertically-disposed members attached thereto each provided with notches, a sleeve slidably fitted on each of said members, a curtain pole supporting bracket pivotally attached to each of said sleeves each of which carries a fixed brace-leg disposed at an angle and engaging at its free end normally in a notch at the upper portion of said verticallydisposed members, and a cord attached to each of said brackets for disengaging the said bracelegs from the notches of the vertical members and raising and lowering the brackets carrying the pole in the manner shown and set forth.
