CASKET-COVER.
SPEGIFIGA TION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,500, dated December 6, 1904;.
Application filed June 30, 1903. Serial No. 163,678. (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS DE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 160 Ross street, in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Casket-(lovers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in casket-covers; and the objects of my improve ments are, first, to provide a casketcover which will deaden the sound when earth is thrown upon the casket; second, to exclude moisture and prevent worms and other vermin from obtaining access to the casket and the body contained therein.
The invention also consists in arrangement, construction, and combination of the several parts of my improved casket-cover, as will hereinafter be more fully described, and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a top view, partly in section; Fig. 3, atransverse view in section; Fig. 4:, a view of my invention unfolded.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My cover is constructed with an inner lining of cotton fabric or other suitable material 1, a layer or sheet of compressed hair or hair felt 2, a layer or sheet of waterproofed asbestos paper 3, and an outer cover of cotton fabric or other suitable material 1, all of which are preferably cut or formed from a single sheet or strip of the material from which they are respectively composed.
Around the inner face of the overlapping edges of my cover when it has been drawn over and about the casket is placed a strip of compressed hair or hair felt 5. When my cover has been placed around the casket, the adjacent edges are overlapped and firmly drawn and fastened together by means of the straps 6 and 7 and the buckles 8, as shown in Fig. 1.
It is a well-known fact that compressed hair or hair felt is an excellent non-conductor of heat and moisture and practically indestructible when placed beneath the surface of the ground. VVaterproofed asbestos paper is also a good non-conductor of heat and practically impervious to moisture and likewise almost indestructible when placed beneath the surface of the ground. Itis also a well-known fact that neither worms nor any other vermin will penetrate compressed hair or hair felt.
When my cover is placed about the casket, the edges overlap, and by means of the strips of compressed hair or hair felt 5 interposed between them a perfect seal of hair or hair felt surrounds the entire casket, so that it is not only protected from moisture and changes of temperature, but the casket and its contents are protected against worms or other vermin by the perfect seal of compressed hair or hair felt.
I may, if desirable, dispense with the inner lining of cotton fabric or other suitable material 1 and also with the layer or sheet of waterproofed asbestos paper 3. In case I dispense with the waterproofed asbestos paper I prefer to coat the compressed hair or hair felt with asphaltum, bitumen, or some other waterproof material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a removable casket-cover, the combination with an envelop of compressed hair or hair felt, of an outer envelop of cotton or other fabric, the adjacent overlapping edges of the envelop being provided with strips of compressed hair or hair felt and means for securing the same to each other.
2. In a removable casket-cover, the combination with an inner lining of cotton or other fabric, of an envelop of compressed hair or hair felt, an outer covering of cotton or other fabric, and strips of compressed hair or hair felt interposed between the adjacent overlapping edges, and means for securing the adjacent overlapping edges to each other.
3. In a casket-cover, the combination with an inner lining of cotton or other fabric, of a Signed in the city of New York, county and layer of compressed hair or hair felt, a sheet State of New York, on this 18th day of June, IQ of Waterproofed asbestos paper and an outer A. D. 1903. cover of cotton or other fabric, and strips of 5 compressed hair or hair felt interposed between the adjacent overlapping edges of the WVitnesses: cover, and means for securing the adjacent ISAAC R. SWEZEY, Jr., overlapping edges to each other. 7 E. QUINN.
