FOUNTAlN-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 775,907, dated. November 22, 1904;.
Application filed November 18, 1902. Serial No. 131,899. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', ALFA R. LEIB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Fountain-Pens; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view partly broken away. Fig. 8 is a view of the piston-rod. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the invention with the parts enlarged.
The invention relates to fountain-pens; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the barrel of the fountain-pen having an internal annular shoulder g near its end, and beyond said shoulder a contracted open-end portion it, which is threaded on its exterior surface to engage the threaded cap-section This cap-section (Z consists of the internally-tlu'eaded portion, which is of the same diameter as the barrel of the pen, and a contracted closed portion beyond the threaded part designed to receive the main end cap a, which is also of the same diameter as the barrel. This end cap e is de signed to be transferred to the seat at the point end of the barrel when the pen is not in use, serving in this position as a protector and guard to the pen-point.
When the section-cap and end cap are placed in position in the end of the barrel, these parts constitute a handle which is flush along with the joints, the swell of the section-cap being between the end cap and the barrel.
Within the barrel is located a piston 2, the plate or body of which is of hard rubber or metal, and this body is provided on its back with a screw-stud b, which projects into the open-end contracted part it of the barrel when the piston is at the end of the bore in contact with the internal shoulder y. The stud Z) is of sufficiently smaller diameter than the interior of the part it to provide an interval around. said stud within the part /t for the reception of the screw-socket (a of the piston-rod 1: This rod is provided with a head f, whereby it may be readily operated.
To the piston-plate is attached a packing or washer c, of soft rubber. The piston is of sufficient thickness lengthwise to hold itself true to the bore when the piston-rod is detached, and it is prevented from being drawn out of the barrel end by the internal shoulder of the latter. When it is not in use, the seetion-screw cap 1] closes the barrel securely and prevents leakage.
In order to fill the pen, the end cap and screw-cap (Z are removed, when the screw-stud of the piston should be found in proper position within the contracted end portion of the barrel. The piston-rod having been attached to said stud, the piston is pushed to the point end of the barrel. The pen-holding portion of said barrel having thus been inserted into the ink, the piston is drawn back in the bore. thereby filling the barrel with ink. The rod is then detached, the section-cap replaced on the barrel, and the end cap on the section-cap.
Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A fountain-pen having an internally-shouldered barrel provided with an open-end exteriorily-tlu'eaded contracted portion beyond said shoulder, within the same a thick pistonbody, having a threaded stud on its back, designed to project into said contracted portion, an internally threaded and shouldered closed section-cap engaging the threaded portion of the barrel end, and a main end cap engaging the section-cap, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof i aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFA R. LE1 B.
