Description

PATENTED NOV. 15, 1904.
w. T. WILSON. GRAPPLING HOOK.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 18, 1904.
' NO MODEL.
UNITED STATEs Patented November 15, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
GRAPPLING-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,900, dated November 15, 1904.
Application filed April 18, 1904. Serial No. 203,685. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oberlin, in the county of Decatur and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grappling-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grappling-hooks, and more particularly a tool for removing piping and other objects which by accident or otherwise have been dropped into. a well.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool of this kind which shall be simple in construction and thoroughly efficient in operation; and with these and other objects in View it consists in an arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the appended drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 a plan View thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawingsA indicates the operating rod or handle of the tool. It is preferably composed of pipe or a series of pipes which are coupled together in any suitable manner according to the depth of the well in which it is to be inserted for the removal of the object. The lower end of the rod or pipe 4 has a threaded socket 5 to receive the shank,6 of the hook, said shank being threaded for that purpose. The hook is also the lowest part thereof.
of piping or other object is placed between the sides 7 and 9 and the hook is lifted up, the object will be tightly wedged in the tapering space referred to, and to assist its grip the sides 7 and 9 of the hook are notched or serrated at 11, which notches are inclined toward the narrowest part of the hook.
In use the tool is lowered into the well after being attached to the operating-rod. It is then manipulated to extend around the piping or other object, as shown, said object being indicated at 12, and when the tool is withdrawn the object will be pulled out of the Well, it being gripped by the hook, as already described. Drills and drill-bits can also be removed with facility by the use of this tool, and instead of the operating-rod L a rope may be used in place thereof. The tool will readily grip the object anywhere along its length, and it is not necessary to first slide it under a head or collar before it will hold.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A grappling-tool comprising a shank having 'a hook extending laterally and downwardly therefrom at an oblique angle thereto, said hook having serrated and diverging sides forming a wedge-shaped space therebetween.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM T. WILSON.
