Be it known that I, HENRY H. ELWELL, of S'outh Norwalk, in' the county of Fairfield, and State of Com nec`tici1t, have invented a new and iniproved Lock; and I do hereby declare lthat thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will 4enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadvto the accompanying drawings, forming-part of this specification.

.This invention relates to a nemend improved lock ofrthat class which areprovided with areversible slidc- 'catch so arranged that it may he adjusted to suit either a right or left-hand door, that is to say, be capable of4 heingapplied to a door which swings in either direction.

lhe object of the invention is to ohtain a lock of the kind specified which will Ybe simple in construction, not add to the compiexity andicost of construction,` and which will not be liable to get out of repair, andr'equire but a 'simple manipulation to adjust the slide-catch, as' circumstances may require in applying the locktothe door. lIn the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is an internal view of a loch provided with my improvement. This hub D is provided with a projection, ,g/,which extends lout from one side of it, and projects beyond from opposite points, eaehvend oi said projection being providedwith alug, 7i, at right'angles withthe ends of g, as shown clearly in iig. 3.

Whentheflugs bear against the hooks e, the hevelled end of thev slide-catch Will'have its innerpart within the opening ax, in the edge of the case, through which opening it works, and hence `the bevelled end of the catch is not allcn'ed'to turn; hut when thelugs t bear against the hooks e', the hevelled end ofthe slide-catch vwill:be-beyond the opening in the side of thecase, (see g. 5,) and said hevelled end may he turned and adjusted to snit either a right or left-hand door. i

The changing of this positionof the slide-catch is eiected byA moving the hub D in the lock-case, suicicnt play being allowed itfor that purpose, and inorder to aii'ord tle hub a proper bearing in the` case, the latteri around the hole in vone side thereof, through which the hub passes,.is cast with a iian'ge, i. I

In order to adjust the slide-catch outward, so that its bevelled end may be turned, the-huh is shoved inthe direction of arrow 1,'(see iig.' 2,) so that the lugs t will be free from the hooks e, and the springfallo-wed to pressl the hev'elled end of the slide-catch outward beyond the opening t0(v inthe edge of the case, the hooks e' catching against z.

In adjustingthe slide-catch back at'tczrrheing turned as desired, it is simply` pressed nach by hand until' the) lugs ,It of the projection g will drop down in front of the hooks @and keep the inner partof the hcvelled end vwithin tlie'opening a ,v.whichwill Iprevent it from turning.

`At`ter the lock is adjusted to t'hefdoor', the hub'D is prevented from moving in the lool; longitudinally with its axis by means of an armhp', which projects troni-a bar, E, fitted within the lock-case, and having 'its outer end extending within the line 'of the holes lc k, in the side .of the case,- through which holes one 0f the. SGI'GW passes, which secures the lock to the door, and whensaid screw is passed through-said holes and screwed into the door,' it keeps the bar foroei back, and the'arm j in contact with the hub D, at one side of the projection g thereof.

By this means the hub D is prevented from casually moving in the direction above stated.

If necessary or esirecl, a. spiral spring, Z, may be made to bear against the bar E, to keep the arm j out from the hub D, to admit of the latter being moved to adjust the slide-catch before the look is applied to the door. i

I do not claim broadlya reversible slide-eateh for locks, to admit of the latter being applied to either a right or left-hand door, for such slide-catches have been previously used; but

I do claim as nemend desire Ato secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The hub D, when adapted to be moved longitudinally with its axis through the lock-case, to release the latch and `admit of its being turned, substantiallfas described, for the purpose specified.

2. In combination'with the sliding hub D, the lla-nge 2', surrounding the hole fonthe passage of tlie hub, upon the inside of the case, wherebysaid Ahub, when operated to release the latch, will not be displaced laterally, as herein showny and described.

3. The arm j of the bar E, arranged as sliownyand in such relation with the screw-holes lc as to cause, when the lock is screwed to the door, the armjto bear against the huh D, and prevent the latter from moving longitudinally to release the vslide-catcl.1, as set forth.
