SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,667, dated September 20, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ADoLrH WVILDMANN, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Placket-Closing Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for closing the plackets of skirts; and the object thereof is to provide improved devices of this class whereby the skirt may be securely fastened at the back and the placket-opening securely closed; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in devices of the class specified constructedas hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol-' lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a back view of the top portion of a skirt provided with my improved skirtfastening and placket-closing devices; Fig. 2, an inside view thereof; Fig. 8, a plan view thereof; Fig. 4, a side view of a skirt-band which I employ; Fig. 5, a sectional view showing the detail of the construction. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are perspective views showing different forms of hooks which I employ, and Fig. 9 a section on the line 9 9 of Fig. 8.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a the placket-opening at the back of a skirt and at a the oppo site side portions of the back of the skirt, at the top thereof or at the waistband portion thereof, and in the practice of my invention I provide a waistband b, which is stitched to the skirt, as shown at c. 6 are provided at regular intervals with eyelets F. The band 7) is also provided at each end and above the strips I) with other eyelets, 6*, arranged at regular intervals and the distance between which is about one-half that of the distance between the eyelets b and said band 6 is also provided at each end with a hook d, and these books d are made as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the hook (Z being provided with a ring 6?, mounted on a grooved eyelet 6Z3, whereby the hook (Z is adapted to turn on said eyelet. I also provide two other hooks, e and f, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The hook e is composed of spring-wire bent to form a loop-shaped hook member 6 and two shank members 6 one of which is longer than the other and projects substantially in line with and beyond the hook member a and is provided with a reverse hook 5*, and the other is bent to form a part 6 which projects substantially at right angles to the shank member e and is provided with a hook-finger 6 The hook f is also composed of spring-wire bent at one end to form a hook member f having a shank f which is longer than the hook and which is formed into an oblong eyelet f which is provided in line with the shank f with a hook-finger f'.

In practice the opposite side portions 64 at the back of a skirt are folded, as shown at a to form flaps a and cf, and one of these flaps is folded at a to form a supplemental flap (0 which extends to the placket-opening a and to which is secured an auxiliary piece or flap a and the supplemental flap a is split, as shown at a", from the top portion downwardly to a predetermined point, and this construction formsatongue or fly g, which when the placket is closed covers the inner side of the placketopening a, and said tongue or fly 9 is provided with three of the hooks d. In folding the parts a of the skirt at a the said folds are made midway between the eyelets 6* of the band 6, the ends of said band at the back being correspondingly folded, as shown in Fig. 3, and the hooks d at the ends of the band 6 are inserted into the eyelets I) of the supplemental strips b as shown at the right and left of Fig. 2 and also in Fig. 3, and the folding of the parts a of the skirt and the end portions of the band 5, as described, also forms reversely-directed end portions 6 of the band 7). The hook e is then applied at the left-hand side of the placket-opening a, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the reversehook 6 being passed through the second pair of eyelets b in the band 6 and the reverselydirected part b at said side of said opening, while the hook-finger e is passed through the eyelet b in the reversely-directed end portion 6 of said band adjacent to the placket-opening; but said hook-finger does not pass through the main part of the band 6 adjacent to said opening, but rests between the two parts of said band, as shown in Fig. 3. The hook f is then applied to the'band b at the right-hand side of said opening, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and in this operation the hook member f is passed through the second pairs of eyelets I) at the right of the placket-opening, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, said hook member being passed through the reversely-directed end part b of said band and also through the main part thereof, while the hook-finger f is passed through the eyelet adjacent to the placketopening in the reversely-directed end portion Wof the band and does not go through the main part of said band. The central hook (Z of the tongue or fly g is then connected with the oblong link member f 4 of the hookf, while the other hook members (Z of said fl y or tongue, which are arranged at the opposite corners thereof, are connected with one of the eyelets, b, in the reversely-directed end portions 5 of the band 6, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, this connection being made in the form of construction shown, with the fourth eyelets, I), counting from the placket-opening a. This operation securely fastens the skirt at the back and also securely closes the placket-opening, and the parts will remain securely connected until they are purposely disconnected, or, in other words, it is impossible for the connection at the back of the skirt to be accidentally broken or for the placket to be accidentally opened, and the tongue or fly 9, which is within the back portion of the skirt, securely closes the placket-opening at all times.

It will be observed that the top of the waist portion is secured to the band 6 between said band and the supplemental strips 6 and said supplemental strips 6 form a part of said band and depend below the top edge thereof of the waistband of a skirt, as clearly shown in-Fig. 2, and the object of making the hooks (Z in the manner described is to permit said hooks to be turned on the eyelets 623 thereof, so that proper connection maybe made with the eyelets Z) in the main part of the band Z) and with the eyelets b in the supplemental parts or strips Z2 thereof.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a skirt-fastening and placket-closing device, a waistband adapted to be secured to the top of a skirt and having supplemental parts secured to the bottom of the opposite end portions thereof and adjacent to said ends, said band being also provided near its opposite ends with eyelets arranged at regular intervals, and said supplemental parts with eyelets also arranged at regular intervals, and

said band being also provided at its opposite ends with hooks, substantially as shown and described.

2. The herein-described means for fastening a skirt at the back and closing a placket-opening, comprising a waistband secured to the top of the skirt and provided with supplemental strips secured to the bottom portion thereof adjacent to each end, said waistband being provided adjacent to each end with eyelets arranged at regular intervals, and said supplemental strips being also provided with eyelets arranged at regular intervals, and the waistband being also provided at each end with a hook; the separate parts of the skirt .at the placket-opening being folded to form reverse flaps whereby the waistband is also folded to form reverse'end parts thereof, one of the flaps of the skirt being refolded to form a supplemental flap to which is secured, an auxiliary piece, said supplemental flap and said piece forming a tongue or fly which covers the placket-opening at the inner side of the skirt, and means for connecting the folded end portions of the waistband and for connecting the tongue or fly therewith, substantially as shown and described.

3. The herein-described means for fastening a skirt at the back and closinga placketopen ing, comprising a waistband secured to the top of the skirt and provided with supplemental strips secured to the bottom portion thereof adjacent to each end, said waistband being provided adjacent to each end with eyelets arranged at regular intervals, and said supplemental strips .being also provided with eyelets arranged at regular intervals, and the waistband being also provided at each end with a hook; the separate parts of the skirtv at the placket-opening being folded to form reverse flaps whereby the waistband is also folded to form reverse end parts thereof, one

of the flaps of the skirt being refolded to form 1 a tongue or fiy which covers the placket-opening at the inner side of the skirt, and means for connectingthe folded end portions of the waistband and for connecting the tongue or fiy therewith, consisting of hook members detachably connected With the adjacent folded end portions of the band, a central hook connected With the tongue or fly and adapted to be connected With one of said hook members, and other hooks connected With the folded end portions of the band, substantially as shown and described.
