PATENT OEEicE.
ISIDOR L. MARROW, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
GARNIENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,596, dated September 20, 1904.
l Application filed May 13, 1904.. Serial No. 207,780. (No model.)
To all wwnt t muy concern:
Be it known that I, IsIDoR L. MARRow, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,
in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to garments, and is especially adapted for use on mens and boys drawers.
It is customaryto provide garments of this kind with non-elastic loops of tape at or near the top, through which may be passed suspender-ends or other supporting attachments for holding the garments in the proper position. As these and the material of which the garments are made do not stretch the loops are frequently of no service, especially for tall men and when the waists of the garments are short. To overcome these objections is the main object of my invention.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of the upper part of a pair of drawers embodying a preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on an enlarged scale. Figs. 3 and I are sectional views of modifications, and Fig.
v5 is a side view showing the garment in position as it would be when attached to the suspenders.
In the drawings elastic parts are represented by large letters and non-elastic parts by small letters.
In Fig. 1 a nether garment is represented by an c and is shown as being provided with a reinforcing top portion or band in two thicknesses. This band is in two parts b and d, which are connected by a knit elastic strip C, preferably passing entirely around the garment near the edge thereof. The seams b and d' for uniting these several portions are represented in Fig. l by dotted lines, and one way of putting the parts together is illustrated in Fig. 2; but a preferred construction is shown in Fig. 4. Elastic loops E are secured to the parts and cl at the points c and c2 and pass upwardly in the manner shown. They are shown as `passing through the parts t and 0l at the openings c3 made for that purpose.
It will be obvious that by making garments upon the principle described full elasticity and play of the several parts of the garment will be obtained and that the objections hereinbefore mentioned will be overcome.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious that it may be modified in various ways without departing from the spiritthereof. Two such modifications are shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In the former the loop e is non-elastic, an elastic tape F being preferably secured to the lower end of the loop and likewise secured to the garment, as in the other case. In Fig. 4. two knit elastic strips C, between the non-elastic reinforcing-bands and d, are shown. These may be secured to the bands and d by placing them together and securing at the seams b and d as if there were only one thickness of knit fabric, or one of the parts C may be sewed at the top and bottom to each of the single parts of the reinforcing portions and Z and the two-completed thicknesses then brought together and secured, which will give the same appearance as in the other case. I prefer to use the two thicknesses of knit fabric C and to secure both of them to one side of each band t d. In Fig. 5 the parts are the same as those shown in Fig. l, but in stretched or extended position, as they would appear when attached to the suspenders L it. g represents the upper part of the trousers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
l. A nether garment composed in the main of non-elastic material having an elastic strip inserted therein near the top, a suspendingloop, andmeans for transmitting a part of any strain on the loop directly to the non-elastic material below the elastic strip at a point near the lower end of the loop, and for at the same time transmitting the rest of the strain on the loop to the same non-elastic material in an indirect and uniform manner throughout the length thereof; said means comprising a plurality of fastening devices between the loop IOO and the garment, one of the fastening devices being located at the lower end of the loop and near the top of the non-elastic portion below the elastic portion, and the rest of the fastening devices being located on the non-elastic portion above the elastic portion.
2. A nether garment composed in the main stretch, but a part of any strain on the loops will b e transmitted directly to the non-elastic Y material below the strip and a part to the nonelastic material above the strip, the latter part thence being transmitted evenly to the fabric below the elastic strip by means of the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISIDOR L. MARROVV.
