PATENT AUTOMATIC BELT-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,850, dated. September 13, 1904.
Application filed April 23, 1904. Serial No. 204,640. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs S. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltic, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Belt- Gruides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic beltguides; and it has for its object to produce a device of this kind in which the number of parts employed in the construction of the device is reduced to a minimum and in which the cost of manufacture is likewise reduced.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following description and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 with the guide pulley removed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the controlling-rollers removed and the controlling-lever shown in section. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the controlling-yoke and its wheels. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the controlling-lever.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is provided a support comprising two parallel and vertical tubular members 1, connected by two horizontal arms 1*, and one being in a lower plane than the other.
A flat attaching-plate 2 and a shoulder 3 above the attaching-plate to rest on the apparatus on which the device is secured are provided on one of the tubular members.
In the vertical opening of the lower tubular member is oscillatingly mounted a spindle 1 of a pulley-support 5. The pulley-support is in the form of a U-shaped yoke, in the arms 6 of which is journaled the shaft of a guidepulley 7. The pulley-support 5 is also formed with an extension 9 in a horizontal plane at its top with the top of the higher tubular member and provided with an upstanding pin 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter mentioned.
In the higher tubular member 1 of the support is oscillatingly mounted a second spindle 12, secured to a controlling-lever 13, which is provided with a longitudinal slot 14:, gradually narrowing from'its free end to its pivot and in which the pin 10 on the pulley-support 5 works. The controlling-lever 13 extends from its pivot on the spindle 12 to and beneath thepulley 7 and between the arms-6 of the pulley-support to the other side of the said pulley-support. The free end of the same is bifurcated at 1 9-, and the arms of the bifurcation are provided with horizontallyalined openings. In the bifurcation 14c is fitted a perforated extension 15 of a U-shaped controlling-yoke 16, which in normal position extendsupwardly, each arm thereof being on one side of the belt 17 and is held in its upright position by a bolt 18 passing through the openings in the bifurcated end of the controlling-lever 13 and the perforated extension 15. The arms of the controlling-yoke 16 are provided with controlling-wheels 19.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The belt is passed over the pulley 7 and between the arms of the yoke 16. As longas the belt runs in a path parallel with the path in which the pulley turns the pulley-support does not turn or oscillate; but as soon as the belt moves to one side of the pulley the edge of the belt on the side to which it moves engages with the controlling-wheels and moves the controlling-yoke in the same direction. As the controlling-lever is loosely connected to the pulley-support between its pivot and the pivot of the pivot-support, the guide-pulley is turned in a direction opposite that in which the controlling-yoke is turned, thereby causing the belt to be drawn toward the center again.
By loosening the bolt 18 the controllingyoke may be lowered out of the path of the belt, or wheels 19 may be brought to work in alinement with the edge of the belt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein is 1. An automatic belt-guide comprising a support composed of two parallel vertical tubular members, one arranged at its upper end in a higher plane than the other, and arms connecting the two members; a pulley-support composed of a U-shaped yoke provided with a horizontal extension having its upper T 5 support and provided with a longitudinal slot gradually decreasing in width toward the pivot of the lever and in which the pin on the extension works, and with a bifurcated free end having openings; a U-shaped controlling-yoke 20 provided with a perforated extension fitted in the bifurcated end of the controlling-lever; and a bolt passing through the openings in the bifurcated end of the lever and the perforation in the extension on the controlling- 2 5 yoke.
3. An automatic belt-guide comprising a support; a belt-pulley support oscillatingly mounted on the support, and provided with an extension and a vertical pin on the extention; a controlling-lever pivoted at one end to the support and provided with a longitudinal slot gradually decreasing in width toward the pivot of the lever and in which the pin on the extension works, and with a bifurcated free end having openings; a U-shaped controlling-yoke provided with a perforated extension fitted in the bifurcated end of the controlling lever; controlling wheels journaled on the controlling-yoke near its ends; and a bolt passing through the openings in the bifurcated end of the lever and the perforation in the extension of the controllingyoke.
