LlFE-PRESERVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '769,847, da ed September 13, 1904.
Application filed March 16, 1904. Serial No. 198,326. (No model.)
To aM whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, ALEXANDER TANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Preservers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to life-preservers of the inflatablering-like-body type, and has for its object to provide a life-preserver of this character of novel construction, with particular reference to the means for fastening the same to the body of the wearer.
The invention consists in the novel features of improvement and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and finally summarized in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the aceom panying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a life-preserver embodying my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly in section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, 1 indicates a ring-like inflatable body, which is preferably composed of an inner rubber section 1 and an outer covering 1, of canvas, duck, or the like, and the inflatable body is provided with the usual air-valve 1.
2 indicates a crotch band or member, of suitable flexible material, such as canvas or the like, having the diverging members 2 2 looped around the body 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and having a suitable tail or extension 2".
3 indicates a band-loop, and 4 a similar loop, both of suitable flexible material, as canvas, encircling the body 1 and meeting at their outer portions and there jointed in suitable manner, so as to hold a suitable buckle or the like 6, and there is also provided a guide-loop 5 to receive the tail 2" when the device is buckled to the wearer. The band-loops 3 A are held against lateral displacement by retaining-loops 7 7, respectively, and the loop members 2 2 are similarly held against lateral displacement by retaining-loops 7 7, and passing through and guided by these several retaining-loops is a waist-belt 8, provided witha suitable tongue-buckle 8 at one end and at its other end with the usual openings 8 for engagement therewith. The loops 7 7 7 7' are preferably secured at their ends be tween the seam 1 of the canvas covering of the inflatable body.
When the device is placed in position upon the body, the belt 8 is buckled tightly to suit the requirements of the wearer, and the crotchband is also adjusted to the required position and buckled to the band 3 4 in obvious manner. By the means shown and described it will be seen that the inflatable body will be firmly held in position upon the body and can be readily attached to and detached from persons of different statures. By covering the inflatable rubber body l with the canvas cov ering 1 I provide a light snugly-fitting flexible protector for the former.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a circular inflatable body, of a waist-belt and crotch-supporting bands, and a series of loops secured to the said body, through which the said belt and crotch-bands movably pass to guide and re tain the belt and crotch-bands against displacement, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a ring-shaped inflatable body, of a crotch-band having diverging members looped around said body, a web or band also looped around said body and provided with a fastening device adapted to engage the free end of the crotch-band, a horizontally-disposed belt movable and guided within loops arranged around the open inner circumference of the body, the said loops also serving to retain the diverging crotch members against lateral displacement, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. A device of the character described, comprising an inflatable body, a series of retaining and guide loops secured thereto, a horizontally-disposed belt movably retained and guided within said loops, and crotch-bands also guided and retained within said loops to prevent lateral displacement thereof, substantially as described.
' ALEXANDER TANN.
