GRILLEWORK- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 769,719, dated September 13, 1904.

Be it known that I, CHARLES WV. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grillework; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pedestals, top brackets, and colonial columns which are used in grillework, door-openings, &c.; and it consists in the provision of means whereby columns may be built up without showing joints and the columns readily adjusted to door-openings of different sizes and fitting perfectly between the top brackets and pedestals, thus affording means whereby full-length pedestals may be furnished which can be cut to any desired length.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in arrangements of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a view of a grillework, showing the columns, top brackets, and pedestals made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the columns. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a pedestal. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a column fitted to a pedestal. Fig. 5 is a detail of a cap to a column.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a column which may be of any shape and ornamentation and designed to be manufactured in any suitable lengths for shipment, and B designates a pedestal which may also be of ornamental design and is provided with a recess C of such shape as to conform to the foot of the column and to receive the same, forming a tight fit or oint. The bottom of the recess in said pedestal is preferably countersunken and adapted to receive a screw through a central aperture D, which screw is adapted to engage projecting portions E, which are integral with the piece of scrollwork E, fastened in any suitable manner to a door or window opening. Said pieces of scrollwork E are adapted to be arranged as shown in the drawings, with the projecting portions thereon, E, extending toward each other, one scroll being inverted to securely hold the caps K and the other scroll to hold the pedestals B in proper positions to receive the columns. The cap K for the column is made substantially similar to the pedestal and may be held in place by means of a screw or other fastening device. In adjusting the columns in place the pedestal and caps may be secured to the grillework below and above, after which the bottoms of the columns may be inserted in the pedestals after the g'rillework holding said pedestals has been secured in place, after which the g'rillework above, holding the caps, may be fitted over the upper ends of the columns.

By the provision of a column with pedestals and caps it will be observed that columns of any length may be furnished and adjusted to any size of door-opening by simply cutting the columns the desired length, thus affording a perfect fit between the columns and pedestals without showing anyjoints.

\Vhile I have shown a particular construction of column and pedestal and bracket-top illustrating the principle of my invention, it will be understood that I may make various alterations in the construction of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
