Description

UNITED STATES ATENI FFICE.
G. SANFORD, OF ELLENVILLE, NEW YORK.
.AUGER-I-IANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,688, dated October 1, 1850.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GELSTON SANFORD, of Ellenville, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auger- Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which like letters in the dlderent gnres designate like parts.
Figure l is an elevation of my improved auger handle mounted upon a bit or auger shank. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same cut lengthwise the dotted lines showing the position of the eccentric when the shank is not fastened. Fig. 3 is an end sectional view of one handle having a dovetail eccentric thereon. Fig. 4L is a side sectional view ot t-he upper end of the bit or shank as made for use in this handle. Fig. 5 is a perspective view ot each half of the handle distinct the tube being on one half and the eccentric on the other.
I construct the handle in two parts or sections as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
A is one halt of the handle made of wood in the usual manner.
B is a hollow iron tube or ferrule one end of which is screwed fast to the half of the handle A.
A is the other half of the handle of wood.
C is a piece of iron made to fit in the iron tube B and fastened to the half of the handle A. 'Ihe endof the iron C is made in the form of a dovetail eccentric as shown- Through the center of the iron tube or ferrule B there is a tapering square slot in the shank.
K is the shank of the auger which is made to t the slot cut through the tube B. In the side of the shank I cut a dovetailing notch.
When I wish to use my auger handle I put theauger shank through the slots in tube B with the side having the dovetail notch toward the handle A. I then put the end ot handle A in the tube B holding the handle A rmly in the hand and turn the handle A the eccentric on the end of which fitting in the dovetail notch in the shank or bit K presses it firmly in the slot in the iron tube B. The dovetail thus fitting in the dovetailed slot keeps the auger rmly in the handle and it so remains when in use.
What I claim herein as new and of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Securing angers and other tools in their handles by means of a tube attached to the inner halt of one part and an eccentric attached to the inner half of the other part of the handle, the eccentric part passing into.
the tube and the eccentric iitting into the dovetailed grooved slot of the shank substantially as herein described.
GELSTON SANFORD. Witnesses:
