M. W. HOUSE.
Lamp- Patented Apri 14, 1868.

MARK W. HOUSE', or oL-EvEnAND, OHIO.
Lener@ Patent No. 76,764, me Apre 14, 1868.
AiuPuovrunenT IN LAMPS.
lllgectthuh ruimt tu in time ettr ttent mit mating gint nf tige same. v
T0 ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Be it known that I, MARK W, HOUSE, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, in the State of Ohio,'hnve invented a new and improved Lamp; and Ldo hereby declare that lthe following is a full and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and-to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a half section, representing my new adapter andltube in their relation to the lamp and burner. The nature of my inventionfcousists in placing an adapter, B, between thoburner, A, of. a common kerosenelarnp and the collar, C, or body of the lomp, made to receive the burner. Theiidapter B maybe mede of any suitable non-eouductingor poor conducting material, such as wood, glass, rubber, Ste. The object gained using the adapter B is to insulate the burner A from the body of lthe lamp, nndthereby prevent the heat 'generated by the burner A descending tothe body of the lump, and raising the temperature of the oil-which itu'iay contain.
Attached to the lower end of the adapter B is a tube,v D, into whichv a second tube, E, is fittedboth sliding together, having a telescopic adjustment, .by which they can be lengthenedor shortened, to correspond to the depth of th-e reservoir of a) lamp containing oil. A s a matter of convenience -in adjusting the sliding tubesl) E to the lamp, the lower 4end of the til/be E is maile seri'nted, to .allow the points to restontthe bottom of the,
oil-reservoir. Near the upper end of the oil-reservoir C,.I make minutely tine holes, e e, through the tubeD or lower part ofthe adapter B. These smallholes e e (size of No. 2K6 American wire gauze 's foud to answer the purpose'very well) lare designed to allow a free escape of any gases that might be generated in the reservoiruC, outside of the tube D, to pass intejt, and up the' wick-tube into the'ame.
It will be'se'en that the wick is to be held inside the tube D, and the oil supplied t'o it at the bottom through the serrated openings e c, in the direction of the redini-rows, which are always in contact with the heaviest or less volatile oil.
v Another object sought to be gained by the application of the tube D is safety in refilling the lamp with oil.
AThe hurner is detached from adapter B, and the oil poured'into thetube D, passingunder thejserrated end of thc tube E, and rising in the reservoir outside of the tubes D and E, expelling the cir through the minute openings into the tube. Should a flame he communicated to the lam'pwhile it-is being filled, it will be confined to the tube alone', as it could neithenpass.through-the solid oil at the bottom, nor' through the minute openings at thc top of the reservoir.
Any convenient way of securing this tube in the reservoir, or making it astntionary part ofthe lamp, would produce the salue eii'ect as to have it movable or attaehedto Athe adaptenA What I c laim. as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The adapter B, in combinationwith .the tube D E, substantially as arranged and described, for the purpose set forth.
