Be it known that I, ADAM \VAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar-falls, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ice-Chisel and Ice-Chipper, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined icechisel and ice-chipper; and the primary object of the same is to provide a device having means whereby ice may be readily broken or separated into parts and an attachment for application thereto for quickly arranging the implement to break the ice into small pieces.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same looking toward the end having the blades therein. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of a detachable blade forming part of the implement.

Similar numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

- The numeral 1 designates a handle having fixed in one end thereof the shank or tang 2 of a chisel 3, constructed in all respects similar to ordinary devices of this class with the exception of a longitudinal slot +t, extending partially through the center thereof and opening out at the lower end between points or teeth The handle 1 at the end in which the shank or tang 2 is secured is formed with a socket 6, opening through the end of the handle and increased in width at its central portion, as at T. A supplemental blade 8 is used in connection with the improved implement and has lower pointed teeth 9 and a longitudinal slot 10 extending through its shank or tang 11 and opening out through the upper terminal of the latter. The shank or tang 11 has secured thereon to one side of the slot 10 a bowed spring-catch 12. The tang 11 is removably fitted in slot which is formed in the lower end of handle 1 in a plane at right angles to the slot constructed to receive the tang 2 of the blade 3. The supplemental blade 8 is freely detachable from the handle, and in assembling said supplemental blade in the handle it is disposed in a plane at right angles to the blade 3 and pushed endwise upwardly over the latter blade, the slots a and 10 permitting the close assemblage of the two blades and the slot 10 being long enough to have the terminals of the teeth 9 of the blade 8 projected just equal to the points of the teeth 5 of the blade 3. \Vhen the blade 8 is fully ap plied, the catch-spring 12 frictionally engages the socket 7, as shown by Fig. 1, and locks the said supplemental blade in engagement with the handle. \Vhen the supplemental blade is fully inserted and secured by the spring 12, the lower end wall of the slot 10 bears against the upper end wall of the slot a.

The improved device may be used as an ordinary ice-chisel by separating the supplemental blade 8 therefrom, or when it is desired to finely break the ice the said supplemental blade may be quickly applied, as set forth, and dispose the teeth of the two blades in such angular relation that ice may bcexpeditiously comminuted by reciprocating the implement. \Vhen the supplemental blade is secured in the handle 1, upward movement and injury to the handle are prevented by the end walls of the slots at and 10 engaging each other.

Changes in the proportions and dimensions may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-- An implement of the character described, comprising a handle provided at one end with a blade having teeth and formed for a part of its length with a longitudinal slot opening out adjacent to the teeth, said handle being formed In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence 0i two Witnesses.
