PIPE-HANGER.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,987, dated July 5, 1904.
Application filed May 20, 1902.-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOSEA K. KRIEBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Hangers; and I do declare the following to be a art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a pipe-supporting device of the fewest possible parts and of simple construction designed to be securely and quickly attached to a beam or other support, freely accommodate itself to the longitudinal expansion and contraction of the pipe supported therein, and having a supporting bracket or hook which may be readiily applied to the suspending member of the device and conveniently adjusted upon said member to maintain the pipe in the proper positime, as occasion may require, as well as the initial regulation.
The invention consists in an attachingmeans, from which is hung a suspending member adapted to swing laterally and longitudinally of the pipe suspended thereby, and a pipesupporting bracket slidably adjustable on said suspending memberand having a curved retaining-face, which under the adjustment of the bracket to different elevations will change its relation to the pipe, so that the point of support for the pipe will vary with said ad justment, thereby permitting the hanger to freely adjust itself to the pipe and still maintain the position which its own gravity requires.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in its preferred form, the attaching means here shown being adapted especially for attachment to metal beams of the usual construction. as the attaching means. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the adjustable pipe-supporting bracket or hook, and Fig. 5 is a view showing the suspending member of the hanger.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the beam to which the hanger is afliXed, which in Figs. 1 and 2 is an I-beam of the usual construction and requires a clamping device to constitute the attaching means for the hanger. The clamping device shown comprises a hooked rod 2, adapted to hook over one side of the base of the I-beam and extend transversely beneath the base and beyond the same a short distance, and a jaw member 3 slidable on said rod member and adapted to be made rigid thereon by means of a set-screw 4, which by contact with the rod member binds the two parts in adjustable position. The jaw member 3 forms the main element of the attaching device and is formed with a depending eye-lug 5 for attaching the hanger proper and a slot 6 to receive the base of the beam. The lower face 7 formed by the slot 6 is flat and has a breadth due to the intentional enlargement of the embracing part of the jaw member and is therefore adapted to lie on the under side of the base and hold the jaw against movement lengthwise of the beam, while the upper face 8 formed by the slot 6 is inclined to give an inward taper to the slot, so as to insure the firm contact of its lower face with the beam and to accommodate the jaw to beams varying in size and still preserve the tight adjustment of the jaw thereon.
By reason of the above-stated provisions the rod member 2 is adapted to be bent up from light-weight wrought-iron rods, as the function thereof is merely to hold the jaw member 3 in place upon the beam. This latter member is preferably cast and forms, together with its cooperating rod member, a simple, effective, and cheaply-manufactured clampfastening for the hanger.
The suspending member 9 is a straight rod bent at one end to form an open eye to hook within the eye 5 of the attaching device and is therefore free to swing in any direction. Upon this suspending member is secured the pipe-supporting bracket or hook 10, which comprises a light curved member and a sleeve 10, formed integral therewith at one end, through which sleeve extends the suspending member 9. This sleeve is provided with a screw-threaded aperture at its rear side to receive a set-screw 11 and is thickened at the aperture by a surrounding boss 10 to make the sleeve of the bracket withstand the binding effects of the screw as well as the strain incident to supporting of the pipe.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the hanger will accommodate itself by gravity, so as to maintain the pipe 12 always in a vertical line below the attaching-eye, as will appear from the adjustment indicated by dotted lines, and the curved supporting-face of the bracket provides for a change of supporting relation between it and the pipe, so that the adjustment of the bracket to different elevations will not interfere with the gravity action of the hanger, as would follow were no provision made for a point of support for the pipe varying with the adjustment.
From the above it will be readily appreciated that areliable and effective hanging deviceis produced that may be readily assembled and adjusted as required and one which will not require tedious adjusting operations or the use of any tool other than a wrench.
W'hat I claim is A pipe-hanger comprising attaching means, a suspending member supported therefrom to swing in all directions a pipe supporting bracket slidably adjustable on said suspending member, and having a retaining curved supporting-face adapted to support the pipe at different points thereon as a result of changes in the adjustment, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
