ROD CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,676, dated June 28, 1904:.

To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAnLEs H. KNoBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rod connections such, for instance, as those used on brake-rods for locomotives and other classes of machinery wherein it is essential to couple, for purposes of operative relation, certain of the mechanisms.
The object of the invention consists principally in providing a rod connection with a jaw having a body and jaw members formed in one piece of malleable iron, steel, or other suitable metal, with a longitudinal inwardlyflaring hole in the body of the jaw, that is adapted to receive the end of a rod which forms the shank-pin of the jaw. This rod or shank-pin is secured to the jaw-body by swaging, so as to be rigidly and immovably fixed thereto.
Heretofore in the construction of jaws suitable for the purposes above mentioned it has been customary to make the jaw members, the jaw-body, and the rod or shank-pin all in one piece of wrought-iron. formation is objectionable, inasmuch as it necessitates making the device wholly by hand, thereby adding materially to the cost of production, at the same time being undesirable when it is necessary to have a number of devices of uniform proportions and exact in their configurations.
In order to obviate the objectionable features above noted, I have devised and constructed the following invention, which I will now proceed to describe and then more particularly point out in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device before the shank-pin or rod is securedthereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partially in section, showing how the shank-pin or rod is secured to the jaw-body. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shank-pin or rod. Fig. 4: is a top View of the jaw.
This method of The invention consists, first, in making a 5 cast of malleable iron, steel, or other suitable metal, wherein 1 is the body of the jaw, which is bifurcated to form the jaw members 2. Extending longitudinally along the outer face of each of the jaw members is a rib 3, which merges into the body and which terminates in a boss 4 adjacent to the free end of the jaw member in such manner that the hole 5 through said jaw member also extends through the boss 4, thereby giving a wider wearingfacefor the pin which enters the hole and connects the jaw with its operating elements.
The body 1 of the device has extending therethrough a longitudinal inwardly-flaring hole 7, having an inner rounded seat 1 and 5 an outer rounded seat 1 and which is adapted to receive therein the wrought-metal shankpin or rod 8. The body end of the device is preferably made tapering or of cone-like formation, although any desirable configuration 7 may be adopted. The cone is truncated in order to form a blunt abutment for the annular rounded shoulder 9 on the shank-pin or rod 8, the inner part of which is received by the outer rounded seat 1 when said rod or shank-pin is placed in position to be secured to the body 1. The longitudinal hole 7 in the body of the jaw is shown as inwardly flaring in order to permit the portion 10 of the shank-pin or rod 8, which has been previously heated and placed in position, to be secured to the jaw, to expand when it is upset, and swaged to form a head 17, overlapping the inner seat 1 and tapering body, as shown in Fig. 2. By casting the jaw of suitable metal 8 5 in such manner that afterward the shankpin or rod can be secured thereto and by providing a greater wearing-surface for the pin which connects the jaw members to their operative elements a rod connection, such as is 9 used for connecting elements of mechanical movements, is produced that will be cheaper and more durable.
It willbe observed that the outer and inner rounded seats are formed by recessing the ends of the inwardly-flaring hole so that the shoulder 9 and head 17 fit within the extremities of the hole against the outer and inner ends of the body, respectively, to rigidly and immovably retain the rod or shank-pin from turning or moving longitudinally within the hole, which is so essential in a rod connection.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what 1 claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A rod connection comprising a jaw constructed of malleable cast metal in one piece, with a body having a longitudinal inwardlyflaring hole extending entirely through the body, and recesses within the extremities of the hole providing inner and outer seats at the inner and outer ends of the body respectively, there being jaw members, and coupling pin holes extending through the jaw members, and a rod or shank-pin swaged into and extending entirely through and rigidly and immovably fixed in the inwardly-flaring hole of the body and having an enlarged upset head fitting in the inner seat and overlapping the inner end of the body and an annular shoulder fitting in the outer seat and overlapping the outer end of the body for preventing endwise movement of the rod or shank-pin.

A rod connection comprising a jaw constructed of malleable cast metal in one piece, with a body having a longitudinal inwardlyfiaring hole extending entirely through the body and recesses Within the extremities of the hole providing inner and outer seats at the inner and outer ends of the body respectively, there being jaw members having reinforcing strengthening-ribs merged into and extending from the body, there being bosses located at the outer ends of the ribs, and coupling-pin holes extending through the jaw members and through the bosses and a rod or shank-pin swaged into and extending entirely through and rigidly and immovably fixed in the inwardly-flaring hole of the body and having an enlarged upset head fitting in the inner seat and overlapping the inner end of the body and an annular shoulder fitting in the outer seat and overlapping the outer end of the body for preventing endwise movement of the rod or shank-pin.
