IMPROVEMENT IN BASE-BURNINGl STOVES.
.@littttiulrxnferrt tu titten @tetten @that mit mating-pnt nf tige time.
Know all men that. I, ROiSERT HLMES, of Detroit, in the vcounty of Wayne, -and State of Michigan, have inventeda new andyusefu-l Improvementori Apparatus for Burning Coal, and consuming the smoke and gases thereof; and I do declare that'the following lis a'true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this speciii'cation.
A The object'o'f this invention is so to construct an apparatusV for the burningioi anthracite and bituminous coals that it willl alsoiconsume .ali the smoke .and gases 'throivnlo' by t-he combustion of the coal. This is done 'by'ha'ving the draught pass downward through the fire, conveying the smoke and gases into the baise, to which a supply of oxygen or common air is admitted, through the'proper orices in the capot` theA base', around and on the outer sides of the {ire-basket, Thisbase must be kept perfectly tight/,so thatvno air can enter it, except through the orifices above referred to. In this way,the oxygen ofthe common air is mixed with the carbon `ot' 'the smoke and gases, and, being ignited by the iii-e inthe basket, they are-en-tirely consumed.' The apparatus alsokcontains a. magazine, for the purpose of holding asupply o f coal, which feeds' the re in the basketin the same manner as in the ordinary base-burning stoves for burning anthraciteA coal.
The use of bituminous coal has been attended with many objections heretofore, arising principally from the large amount of unconsumed carbonthrown o'in the form of smoke and gases, and the frequency with which the coal must-'b'e supplied.` In my invention,I obviate these serious objections, as I entirely yoonsurne this carvbon, thereby deriving a. rauchI greater heatvfrom' the 'same amount of coal, and consequently requiring a less quantity of fuel to heat a given space. l
' My invention is. vapplicable to all kinds of heating or cookingstoves, hot-'air furnaces, stationary vor locomotive-boilers. v v l The drawing, which isa. vertical sectional view of my invention, shows it applied to a hot-air furnace,'in ivhich A'represents the base; B, the rire-basket; C, the magazineg'D, the entrance for the draught; E, the damper; F, the cover tothe magazine, and the 4place for-filling in the coal. G is the semi-rotatinggrate or, bottom o'frthe fire-basket, operated by the rod H, which projects, with a properl handle, through the front oi the base.. I is a proper door,V opening in the front of the base,`-through which to tal-e out ashes. J are the o'riiices for the admission of air to the base. i A l I 'Io kindle a fire, fili the fire-basket up to the bottom of the draught D. Then'iaythe kindling on to the rroai and ignite it, taking care to vleave the'vdauoper E openl The draught, being downward and through the fire, em'ries all the smoke and gases-down into the bas-e, while the air'admitted to itthro'ugh the openings J, mingling with them, causes them to burn. 'lhe-eourse of the draught from the base is upwards, through the fines L, into the drum M, and 'thence into the iue I? and the chimney. N are radiating-nues. I i
When it is reoliiiredto clear the base froiirashes, clos-e t'he -damper-Iii, open the damper K., when a.
directdraught is obtained, through vthe pipe or ue.( by opening the door I, throughv which the refuse can be taken out. l
- What I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is'- The combination. and arrangement of'thedampersE, I, and K, and dues D, O, L, and P, to produce either a downward or .a direct draught, substantially-as described. Q
