UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. MCCULLEY, OF-EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS. V
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,532, dated May 31, 1904., I Application filed February Z'Z, 1904. Serial 1%.195574. (No model.)
drawings.
Th1s lnvention relates to improvements in washing-machines, and has for its object-the provision of an apparatus of this character possessing novel structural characteristics which render the same eflicient in the washing of clothes and of such arrangement as to obviate to the greatest possible extent any danger of tearing the articles operated upon. I With the foregoing ob ect in View a con venient embodiment of the invention comprises a tub or receptacle, preferably elongated and of rectangular formation, separated roll-' ers arranged transversely of the tub, means whereby the'rollers are yieldably related, and a reciprocating bed or support shiftable back and forth longitudinally of the tub or receptacle intermediate the rollers, in combination with guides for the bed and means over hanging the latter to confine the same.
' The novel details in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the apparatus will be apparent from the detailed de- .scription hereinafter when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof and wherein the above-mentioned embodiment is illustrated. V
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the machine. Figs. 2 and 8 are a longitudinal and transverse sectional "View, re spcctively, of Fig. 1. v
Referring more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference-letters-refer to corresponding parts in the several views, A designates an elongated tub or receptacle of substantially rectangular formation, a being the bottom thereof, inclined downwardly and inwardly from the ends of the receptacle to a medial line, and B is an outlet-plug arranged centrally of the receptacle and at its lower? most point, whereby the same may be drained when not in use.
The receptacle just mentioned is conveniently supported by legs 0, secured to the sides thereof and arranged adjacent to its ends. D D are uprights secured to the inner faces of the sides of the receptacle and projecting somewhat above the upper edges thereof, said uprights being arranged centrally of said sides,
and E E are separated transversely-disposed rollers supported by said standards. The lowermost roller E is fixed in the standards, while the uppermost roller E is yieldably supported therein through the medium of an axle c, the opposite ends of which project into vertically-disposed slots 0 in the standards.
To impart the desired pressure to the upper roller,I provide bearing-blocks F, resting upon the upper surface of the projecting portions of the axle, said blocks having stems extending upwardly and through guide-aperturesf at the ends of a cross-piece G, rigid with the upper ends of the standards.
blocks, the lower edges of the same abutting "said blocks, while the upper edges thereof Coil-springsH are sleeved upon the stems of the bearingpermit the working of the water within the a of, so as to press the articles being washed directly upon the reticulated fabric. One or both of the rollers may be corrugated, but preferably the upper roller only, as shown.
M is an operating-crank secured to one end,
of the axle ofthe upper roller and projecting through the vertically-disposed slot m in the side of the tub or receptacle. This lever is rotated alternately in different directions to correspondingly rotate the roller to which it is secured, and the friction between the rollers and the bed will be sufiicient to drive the latter back and forth, as hereinbefore stated. To prevent tilting of the bed, I .secure to the sides of the receptacle guide-rails N, disposed directly beneath projecting bearings N on the bed-frame, said rails respectively extending from the end walls of the receptacle to the edges of the central uprights, and represents overhanging flanges or projecting strips secured to the sides of the receptacle and above the projecting bearings of the bed and its guide-rails to prevent the clothes being caught upon said projecting bearings and torn thereby.
It is to be understood that slight changes may be made in the structure disclosed herein and that the invention is not to be limited to any details excepting in so far as the same may be specifically included in the herto-ap 3. In a washing-machine, a receptacle, a reciprocatory reticulated supporting-bed therein, means for supporting said bed, a roller above said bed and cooperating therewith, and means for varying the pressure of said roller toward the bed comprising bearingblocks engaging the axle of the roller, stems on the bearing-blocks, a followerslecved upon said stems, and springs interposed between the follower and said blocks.
4. In a washing-machine, a receptacle, a reciprocatory frame, a reticulated fabric carried by said frame, means for supporting the frame in the receptacle, and a yieldably-mounted roller cooperating with said fabric, said roller being of a length less than the distance between the side bars of the frame whereby the same may project thereinto.
5. In a washing-machine, areceptacle, a reeiprocatory frame, areticulated fabric carried by said frame, means for supporting the frame in the receptacle, a yieldably-mounted roller cooperating with the upper surface of said fabric, said roller being of a length less than the distance between the side bars of the frame whereby the same may project thereinto in combination with a second roller engaging the lower surface of said side rails of the frame.
6. In awashing-machine, a receptacle, a reciprocatory reticulated supporting-bed therein, means for supporting said bed, and a pair of opposing rollers cooperating with said bed and between which the bed works.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. MCCULLEY.
