FENCE-POST- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOSEPH T. MARTIN. and EVERETT L. WILSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of Hopkins and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides an improved form of fence-post and relates more especially to the manner of supporting the post structure in position, same being supported by a baseplate beneath the surface of the ground to which the fence-post is secured in a manner which will appear more fully in the description hereinafter.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the relative arrangement of the parts.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following-description and indicated in both views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The post 1 is preferably constructed of metal and is provided upon one side thereof and at intervals in its length with a plurality of notches 2, which receive the line-wires when the device is in operative position. The portions of the body of the post adjacent the notches 2 are bent so as to close the said notches after the line-wires have been disposed therein, thus affording a securing means for preventing displacement of the said wires from the post. The lower portion of the post 1 is formed with a projection or point 3,which element is received by an opening 4 in abaseplate 5, which supports the post. The baseplate 5 may be of metal or wood and is disforming part of Letters Patent No. 761,085, dated May31, 1904.

posed beneath the. surface of the ground in a horizontal position, as clearly shown in the drawings. The said plate 5 not only supports the post from sinking movement, but prevents lateral movement thereof, since the point or projection 3 is received by openings 4. Upon both sides of the post and spaced therefrom are located pins 6 or like anchoring members, adapted to be driven into the ground in the positions indicated. The pins 6 are connected by brace-wires 7 to the upper end portion of the post 1, the said brace-wires preventing any lateral movement and serving as a brace means in a manner which will be readily comprehended. The pins 6 are also connected to the base-plate 5 by means of tie-wires 8, and each pin thus reinforces the other to prevent any shifting of the base-plate in either direc tion. It will be noted that the base-plate may be constructed of a comparatively thin metal plate or wood'plate, if desired, and a saving of material is thereby effected. The post is of course braced by the line-wires 9.

The structure of the post is very simple when made in accordance with our invention, at the same time being one very eflicient in use.

' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In combination, a base-plate, anchoring members spaced from the base-plate, connecting means between the base-plate and said anchoring members, a fence-post supported upon the base-plate, and means for bracing said fence-post.

2. In a fence-post, a horizontal base-plate provided with an opening receiving the lower end of the fence-post, anchoring members disposed adjacent the post, and connecting means between the upper ends of the post and the anchoring members and other connecting nieans between the said members and the basep ate.

3. In combination with a fence-post provided at intervals in the length thereof with notches to receive the line-wires and having the lower end thereof formed with a projection or point, a horizontal base-plate provided with an opening receiving the point of fencepost, ground-pins disposed adjacent the post,

posed approximately upon opposite sides I thereof, connecting means between the baseplate and the anchoring members aforesaid, a fence-post resting upon the base-plate and having its lower end in engagement with the said base-plate, and brace means connecting the upper portion of the fence-post with the anchoring members adjacent the base-plate.
