Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ANDREJEW- rrsorr DRUTSOI-IENKOW, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing in St. Petersburg, Russia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Attaching Fibrous Material to Cigarette Mouthpiece Blanks, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to mechanism for attaching cotton or other suitable fibrous material to mouthpiece material which is intended to be rolled up to form a mouthpiece to be inserted in the end. ofa cigarette wrapper-tube, the cotton forming a plug or wad in and preferably near one end of the rolled-up mouthpiece-tube for the purpose of preventing the tobacco which is inserted in the wrapper-tube from being pushed too far into the tube and from passing through the mouthpiece and also acting to purify the smoke. Machines have been heretofore constructed for attaching cotton to mouthpiece material for this purpose; but such machines have been constructed to secure the cotton to the mouthpiece material by the use of adhesive material. This method of aflixing the cotton to mouthpiece-blanks is objectionable on account of the cost of the paste, the effect on the taste of the tobacco, and the liability of parts of the machine becoming soiled by the paste.
The present invention aims to overcome the difliculties due to the use of paste and to avoid the necessity of using paste or other adhesive and does this by providing for attaching the cotton to the mouthpiece-blanks mechanically. This is done, preferably, by the use of needles or punches which act to force a small portion of the cotton through the mouthpiece material, so that when the punch or needle is withdrawn the portion which has been forced through thematerial will hold the tuft of cotton to the mouthpiece-blank.
As a full understanding of the invention can best be given by a detailed description of a preferred construction embodying the various features of the invention, such a description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, showing such a preferred construction.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine for severing tufts or portions of cotton from a rope or sliver of such material and attaching the successive tufts to successive portions of a web of mouthpiece material as the latter is advanced through the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 3 is an end View looking from the right in Fig. 1 and showing the machine with parts removed. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line A of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but illustrating the use of two cotton attaching needles or punches. Figs. 7 and 8 are enlarged detail views showing the cotton secured to the mouthpiece material by one and two punches, respectively. Fig. 9 is an enlarged detailed plan or face view of a portion of the mouthpiece material, showing the cotton secured thereto.
Referring to the drawings, the mouthpieceblanks are preferably fed through the machine in the form of a web a, of mouthpiece material, which passes from a guide-roll 10 past the cotton-attaching mechanism to a guide-roll l1 and thence upward and about a guide-roll 12, from which it passes to feedrolls 13 and 14, from which it may pass to the severing and mouthpiece-forming mechanism or otherwise. Upper and lower guide- plates 15 and 16 are preferably provided for supporting andguiding the web of mouthpiece material at the time the cotton is being at tached thereto. The plate 15 is provided rear the line of travel of one edge of the mouthpiece material with one or more openings 20, so as to form a die-plate to cooperate with one or more reciprocating punches or needles 21, which are carried by a bracket 22 on a bar 23, mounted to reciprocatein a suitable guideway 24. The guides 15 and 16 are preferably arranged substantially horizontal and the bar 23 mounted to reciprocate substantially vertically, as shown. by means of a cam 25 on the cam-shaft 26,
The bar 23 is reciprocated acting through a lever 27, one end of which carries a cam-roll running in contact with the cam and the other end of which bears against a roll carried by the lower end of the bar 23, which lever alternately raises the bar 23 against the tension of a spring 28 and permits the bar to be moved'downward by said spring. The mouthpiece material being in position on the support and a tuft of cotton having been placed on the mouthpiece material over the opening and the bar 23 being then moved downward, the punch 21 will force a portion of the cotton through the mouthpiece material and into the opening 20, and the bar then moving upward the punch will be retracted, leaving a portion of cotton projectingth'rough the hole which has been made in the mouthpiece material, the cotton being prevented from being withdrawn with the plunger by the edges of the mouthpiece material. Then as the mouthpiece material is advanced over the support 15 the portion of the cotton projecting into the opening 20 will as it is withdrawn from the opening 20 by the onward movement of the mouthpiece material be bentbackward, substantially as shown at 0 in Fig. 7. When the tufts of cotton are attached at intervals to a continuous strip or web of mouthpiece material, as in the machine sho'v 71:, the web of material will be fed through the machine intermittently, its movement being interrupted to havea tuft of cotton attached after each movement, by which it has been advanced a mouthpiece length, and the attaching-punch will be operated to descend and rise again during such stoppages of the movement of the web. The cotton is preferably fed 'to the attaching mechanism in the form of a rope or sliver b, from which portions are successively severed to form the tufts to be attached to the mouthpiece material. For this purpose a bent guide is preferably provided for the sliver of cotton, and this guide is preferably a reciprocating guide, being supported by a carriage 31, mounted to slide in a guideway 32. The carriige and guideway are preferably positioned so that the carriage will slide longitudinally of the direction of movement of the mouthpiece material, and the guide 30 is positioned on the carriage with its delivery end arranged above the path of the paper, being supported by a bracket 33 and extending longitudinally of the direction of movement of the carriage and in line w1th the die-opening 20 and punch 21. Mounted to rest on the sliver in the guide and near the delivery end thereof is a pawl, which is preferably formed by means of a pin 38, carried by and preferably adjustable longitudinally in a holder 39, pivoted to the support or bracket 33.

The movable shear-blade 41 is shown as pivoted and held to duty by a spring 42 and operated by means of a cam 43 on the shaft 26 acting against a cam-roll on a lever 44, cornccted by rod 45 with an arm 46, connected to the shear-blade 41, the cam acting to give the shear -blade its cutting movement against the tension of a spring 47. The web of mouthpiece material is guided beneath the stationary shear blade by a guide 48.
In the operation of the machine by the forwrrd movement of the glide 30 the projecting'end of the sliver is advanced beneath the punch 21'. The punch then de: sends and forces a por tion of the end of the sliver through the mouthpiece material, as above described, and while the end of the sliver is thus held by the punch the guide 30 is moved bnk again, the pawl 28 during this backward movement of the guide sliding over the sliver as the latter is drawn through the guide. When the guide has completed its backward movement, the sliver is severed by the shears and the punch 21 is raised and the mouthpiece ma rial moves forward a distance corresponding to the length of a mouthpieceblark. In order that the end of the sliver may be more securely clamped during the backward movement of the guide, the 'punch is preferably formed with a shoulder 50, which acts to positively clamp the cotton against the mouthpiece material on the support 15.
The quantity of cotton to be attachql to the mouthpiece-blanks will de pend on the thickness of the cigarettes for which the mouthpieces are to be used and the corre- IIO spending size of the mouthpieces. In some cases for mouthpieces for large-size cigarettes it is desirable in order to more securely attachto the mouthpiece-blanks the necessary quantity of cotton to provide more than one of the punches 21. The provision of two such punches is shown in Fig. 6. The punches are preferably removably and adjustably secured in the bracket 22, and the bracket is preferably formed, as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 6, to carry a plurality of punches, so that one or more punches may be used, as desired. The plate will of course be formed with a number of die-openings corresponding to the number of punches the bracket 22 is adapted to carry.
lln order to provide for supplying portions of the sliver of a greater or less length for attachment to the mouthpiece material, means are preferably provided for varying the length of reciprocations of the slide carrying the guide 30. For this purpose the forward movement of the slide is preferably limited,
as by means of a stop 55, and the cam 34: is
mounted so as to be capable of adjustment longitudinally on the shaft 26, as by means of the slotted connection ind icated in Fig. 1. By this arrangement when the cam is adjusted on the shaft as shown in Fig. 1 the lever 35 will not receive the full throw of the cam; but by moving the cam on the shaft to the right in Fig. 1 the movement given to thelever 35, and consequently the distance that the guide 30 is retracted, may be increased up to the full movement which the cam is capable of giving to the lever.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement of parts as shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention and to which the foregoing description has been mainly confined, but that the invention includes various changes and modifications thereof Within the claims.
l/Vhat is claimed is 1. In a machine for attaching fibrous material to mouthpiece material, the combination of means for supporting the mouthpiece material, and means for mechanically attaching the fibrous material thereto, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for attaching fibrous material to mouthpiece material, the combination of means for supporting the mouthpiece material, means for feeding the fibrous material thereto, and means for mechanically attarlting the fibrous material to the mouthpiece material, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for attaching fibrous material to mouthpiece material, the combination of means for supporting the mouthpiece material, means for feeding a sliver of fibrous material, means for cutting off short lengths of the sliver of fibrous material, and means for mechanically attaching such lengths of fibrous material to the mouthpiece material, substantially as described.
4. The combination of means for advancing a strip of mouthpiece material, and means for mechanically attaching pieces of fibrous material thereto at intervals of the length thereof, substantially as described.
5. The combination ofasupport for mouthpiece material, a punch for forcing a portion of fibrous material to be attached to the mouthpiece material through the mouthpiece material, and means for drawing the mouthpiece material past said support to bend the projecting portion of fibrous material against the mouthpiece material, substantially as described.

The combination of a support having an openin g therein, means for advancing a strip of mouthpiece material past said support, means for feeding a sliver of fibrous material, means for cutting elf short lengths of the sliver of fibrous material, and a punch for forcing a portion of the fibrous material through the mouthpiece material into said opening, substant ally as described.
11. The combination of means for advancing a strip of mouthpiece material, means for feeding a sliver of fibrous material, devices for cutting off short lengths of the sliver of fibrous material, a punch forforcing a portion of the fibrous material through the mouth piece material, and means for bending the projecting fibrous material against the mouthpiece material, substantially as described.
12. The combination of means for supporting mouthpiece material, means for attaching fibrous material to the mouthpiece material including a punch for forcing a portion of the fibrous material through the mouthpiece material, and means for bending the projecting portion of fibrous material against the mouthpiece material, substantially as described.
13. The combination of a support for monthpiece material, a feeding device for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material, means for mechanically attaching the fibrous material to the mouthpiece material, and means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the attaching meansand the feeding device, substantially as described.
14. The combination of a support for mouthpiece material, a reciprocating feeder for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material including a reciprocating pawl, a punch for forcing a portion of the fibrous material through the mouthpiece material and for holding the fibrous material during the backward movement of the feeder, and means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the punch and the feeder, substantially as described.
15L The combination of a support for m0uthpiece material, a reciprocating feeder for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material, a punch for forcing a portion of the fibrous material through the mout :piece material, means for clamping the fibrous material against the mouthpiece material on the support during the backward movement of the feeder, and means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between said clamp and the feeder, substantially as described.
16. The combination of a support for mouthpiece material, a reciprocating feeder for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material, a punch for forcing a portion of the fibrous material through the mouthpiece material, a clamp moving with the punch for clamping the fibrous material against the mouthpiece material on the support during the backward movement of the feeder, and means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the punch and the feeder, substantially as described.
17. The combination of a feeder for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material, a plurality of punches arranged in the line of feed of the sliver for forcing portions of the fibrous material through mouthpiece material, and means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between said punches and the feeder, substantially as described.
18. The combination of means for supporting mouthpiece material, and means for attaching fibrous material to the mouthpiece material including a plurality of punches for forcing portions of the fibrous material through the mouthpiece material, substantially as described.
' 19. The combination of means for supporting mouthpiece material, a feeder for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material, means for attaching such lengths of fibrous material to the mouthpiece material, means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the attaching means and the feeder, and adjusting means for varying the length of the successive lengths of the sliver of fibrous material, substantially as described.
20. The combination of means for supporting mouthpiece material, a reciprocating feeder for advancing successive lengths of a sliver of fibrous material, means for attaching suchlengths of fibrous material to the mouthpiece material, means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the attaching means and the feeder, andmeans for adjusting the length of the reciprocations of the feeder, substantially as described.
21. The combination of a support for monthpiece material, a reciprocating feeder for advancing successive lengths of sliver of fibrous material, a reciprocating member adapted to carry one or a plurality of punches for forcing portions of thefibrousmaterial through the mouthpiece material, means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the punches and the feeder, and means for adjusting the length of the reciprocations of the feeder, substantially as described.
22. The combination of the support 15 having an opening 20, guide 16, and reciprocating punch 21 for forcing portions of fibrous material through mouthpiece material into the said opening 20, substantially as described.
23. The combination of a support 15, a punch 21 for forcing portions of fibrous material through mouthpiece material supported by the support 15, said punch having a clamping-shoulder 50, a reciprocating feeder for advancing successive lengths of asliver of fibrous material between the punch and the support, and means for severing the sliver of fibrous material between the punch and the feeder, substantially as described.
