PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN JOHN HINMAN, OF \VESTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
PIPE ATTACHMENT FOR WRENCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,442, dated May 10, 1904. Application filed September 28, 1903. Serial No. 174,273. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN JOHN HINMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe Attachments for Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe-wrench attachments, the object being to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective attachment adapted to be secured to the shank of an ordinary monkeywrench and to fit between the jaws thereof and provided with intermediate serrated jaws adapted to grip the pipe, so that the wrench to which my attachment is secured may be effectively used upon round pipes or rods in the same manner as the ordinary wrench is used upon angular nuts.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple device of the class described that can quickly and easily be secured to any wrench and used in connection therewith.
My invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying the specification and forming a part thereof, Figurel is a side elevation showing my device attached to an ordinary monkey-wrench. .Fig. 2 is a pieces are of the same shape as the jaws d, but are formed so as to leave a blank space between the serrated jaws at the point where the teeth are set, as shown at f, in order to permit the fur of the metal caused by the gripping of the pose.
teeth upon a pipe or red to settle between the aws.
g is a removable member with a notch it therein, as shown, which allows it to be fitted snugly on the pin or bolt 0, the end of which extends beyond the serrated jaws for that purvided with a locking-clip 2', adapted to engage with and settle into a kerf it in the end of the rigid member in order to hold the removable member firmly in place when the device is secured to a wrench.
In operation the rigid member 6 is placed upon the shank of a wrench, so as to bring the back of the serrated jaws tight against the shank with the teeth facing the opening between the jaws of the Wrench. The device is so constructed, it will be readily observed, that the back thereof may rest upon either the rigid or removable jaw of the wrench, as may be desired. The removable member is then put in place, with the notch 7t fitting over the end of the pin or bolt 0. The device is then effectively secured in place on the wrench by pressing the locking-clip into the kerf It.
My device may be made of any desired size, so that it will fit any ordinary wrench, and. while when detached the serrated jaws and the spacing-pieces swing loosely on the pin or bolt 0 it will be observed that when the same is fitted on the shank of a wrench the jaws and spacing-pieces are held rigidly and firmly in place and are immovable.
Certain modifications of form and arrangement of parts may suggest themselves to the skilled mechanic; but such modifications and arrangements come well within the scope and spirit of my invention as disclosed and claimed, and I therefore do not desire to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, having a plurality of angular serrated jaws disposed between two side members, substantially as described.
2. A pipe-wrench attachment for monkey- The removable member 1 is also prowrenches, having a'j aw with a plurality of serrations, and with intermediate spaces between the serrations, substantially as described.
3. A pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, having a plurality of angular serrated jaws disposed between a rigid and a removable member, and a plurality of spacingpieces disposed between the jaws, substantially as described.
4. A pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, having a plurality of angular serratedjaws disposed between two side members, a plurality of spacing-pieces disposed between the jaws, and a locking-clip, substantially as described.
5. A pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, having a plurality of angular serrated jaws disposed between a rigid and a removable member, a plurality of spacing-pieces disposed between the jaws, and a locking-clip, substantially as described.
6. A pipe-Wrench attachment for monkey- A wrenches, having a plurality of serrated jaws disposed between two side members, and provided with intermediate spaces between the serrations on the difierent jaws, substantially as described.
7 A pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, having a rigid and a removable member, a plurality of angular serrated jaws pivoted between the members, a plurality of spacing-pieces disposed between the jaws, and a locking-clip, substantially as described.
8. A pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, having a plurality of serrated jaws disposed between two side members, a pivot, a plurality of spacing-pieces disposed between the jaws, and a locking-clip adapted to engage with a kerf, substantially as described.
9. In a pipe-wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, a rigid member provided with a pin, a plurality of angular serrated jaws with spacing-pieces disposed between them, and adapted to swing on the pin, a removable member, a notch or kerf therein adapted to fit on the end of the pin, and a locking-clip adapted to engage with a kerf in the end of the rigid member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
STEPHEN JOHN HINMAN.
