To (all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, DANIEL T. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State 5 of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Cocks or Valves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art I to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in safety devices for locking cocks, particularly gas-cocks, whereby when the gas is turned off I the cock will be safely and positively locked, so that the same cannot he accidentally turned to its opened position.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple 2 in construction, durable in use, very eflicient for the purpose intended, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of 5 construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 3 a side elevation of one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, showing how the locking-lever may be disengaged by means of the ordinary gas- 3 5 lighter. Fig. 4c is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another form of my invention. Fig. 6 is an end view of the gas-fixture shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view through the 4 same. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the upper end of the key and the handle, showing said parts separated. Fig. 9 is a sectional view through still another modified form of my invention.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the usual conical plug-valve, rotatably mounted in the usual conical valve-casing 2, which forms a part of a gas-fixture of any description. Said casing 2 is segmentally cut away 5 at one end to provide stop-shoulders 3, with which a stop-pin 4:, carried by said plug-valve, coacts to limit the rotation of the latter. The plug-valve is formed at one end with a key or handpiece 5, upon which my improved safety locking device 6 is mounted. The device 6 comprises a locking-lever 7, pivoted intermediate its ends upon a pin 8 between ears 9, formed upon one face of said key 5 adjacent to the plug. The long end or arm 10 of said lever is bent substantially at right angles and projects through an opening or slot 11, formed in the key 5 a short distance from its lower or outer end. Said end 10 is formed with a finger-piece 12 and a strengthening-rib 13. 5 A coil-spring 14:, interposed between the opposing faces of said key and said lever and retained by its engagement with studs or projections 15, is adapted to force the long end 10 of the lever outwardly and its shortend 16 7 inwardly against the valve-casing 2 or the plug-valve 1. Said short end 16 rides upon the lower end of the valve-casing 2 when the valve is being turned; but as soon as the valve reaches its closed position the spring will force said end 16 into the cut-away portion, so that one of the shoulders 3 will prevent its accidental rotation. The plug is thus locked and cannot turn until the lever is operated to move the end 16 out of engagement 30 with the shoulder 3. The operation and advantages of this form of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. By pressing theiin- 5 ger-piece 12'upwardly or inwardly against the tension of the spring 1d the end 16 of the lever is disengaged to unlock the plug-valve. It will be seen upon reference to Fig. 3 that the device may be operated by the usual gas- 9 lighter A. The jaws a of the key-turning socket formed upon said lighting device A engage the rib 13 on the locking-lever and force the end 10 of the latter upwardly or inwardly to disengage the end 16 from the shoulder 3.
The form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, of the drawings is particularly adapted for use upon the burners of gas-stoves or burners so located that children may readily reach them. This device is provided with a double locking feature, which overcomes all liability of the accidental turning of the gas cock or valve. As shown, the valve-casing is formed with stop-shoulders 21, similar to the shoulders 3, and the plugvalve 22 is provided with a stop-pin 23, adapted to limit the rotary movement of said plugvalve. The plug-valve key 24: is formed upon one side at about its center with apertured ears or lugs 25 and at the upper or outer end of its opposite side with a substantially circular socket 26, formed by a projecting annular rib or flange 27. The upper portion of said flange is formed with a bayonet-slot 28, the mouth of which is flaring or tapered, as shown at 29, and the key 24 is formed with a slightlyelongated circular aperture 30, which is substantially concentric with the socket 26. Pivotally mounted upon a pin 31, passing through the apertures in said ears 25, is a locking-le- Ver 32, the short end or arm 33 of which engages the casing and coacts with the stopshoulders 21, similar to the construction previously described. Swiveled, as at 34, in the opposite end or long arm of said lockingle ver is a stem 35, which projects through the aperture and has its end formed with a handle 36. The circular portion 37 on the inner end of said handle is adapted to enter the socket or casing 26, and a pin or lug 38, formed integrally on the portion 37 or otherwise attached to the handle, is adapted to enter said bayonet-slot 28, formed in the socket-flange 27. A coil-spring 39, surrounding the stem and confined between the key 25 and the end of the lever, is adapted to draw the handle into the socket 26 and force the locking end 33 inwardly, as will be readily understood. The upper end of the key 24 is formed with a right-angularlyprojecting guard &O, which extends above the stem 35 and spring 39 to protect and shield the same from dust and dirt. hen the plug-valve is in its closed position and locked and it is desired to open the valve, the handle 36 is given a slight turn to move the pin 38 from the locking portion of the bayonet-slot into line with the mouth portion of the same. The handle is then depressed to swing the lever against the tension of the spring 39 and disengage the locking end 33 from the stop-shoulder 21 to permit the key and plug to be turned. IVhen the valve is turned to its closed position and the handle released, the spring will actuate the lever, forc ing its end 33 into locking engagement with one of the shoulders 21 and drawing the porsible for the cock to be accidentally opened by children playing with or handling it.
In Fig. 9 of the drawings I have illustrated another form of my invention. The turningplug of this cock or valve is formed in one of its ends with a slot 51, and in said slot is riveted or otherwise fastened, as at 52, one end of aspring-plate 53, which is bent upon itself, as at 54, to form a spring-arm 55, and is further bent approximately at right angles to form a finger-piece 56. It will be seen that the plate 53 forms a key or handpiece by means of which the plug may-be turned, and the upper end 57 of the spring-arm coacts with stop-shoulders 58 on'the plug-casing similar to those in the other forms of my invention. By pulling the finger-piece outwardly said end 57 may be disengaged from the stop-shoulder to release the plug 50.
It is evident that my invention may be applied to turning plug-valves of any description; but it is particularly adapted for burnervalves of gas-brackets,chandeliers, gas-stoves, and any kind of gas-fixtures. Instead of using coil-springs, as previously described, plate or ribbon springs may be substituted, as will be readily understood. Various other changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety gas-cock comprising a valvecasing, a plug revoluble therein, a lockinglever carried by the plug, said casing and lever having coacting locking devices, aspring to normally retain the locking-lever in locking position, means to operate the locking-lever, and means to lock the lever-operating means.
2. In a cock or valve, the combination of a valve-casing having stops, a rotary valve in said casing provided with an apertured key or handpiece, a spring-actuated locking-lever pivotally mounted upon said key and having one of its ends coacting with said stops, a handle projecting through the aperture in said key and attached to said lever, and means for locking said handle to said key to prevent movement of the lever, substantially as described.
3. In a cock or valve, the combination of a valve-casing having stops, a rotary valve in said casing provided with a key or handpiece having an apertured socket, a spring-actuated locking-lever pivotally mounted upon said key and having one of its ends coacting with said stops, a handle swiveled to said lever and projecting through the apertured socket upon said key, and a locking slot-and-pin connection between said handle, and said socket, substantially as described.
