PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 758,138, dated April 26, 1904.
' Application filed June 10,1902. Serial No- 110,991. on model.)
To rtlbwhom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES J. HIN'DE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to improvements in packing-boxes intended for use in the ship-- ment of fragile articles, and more especially designed for use in packing lamp-globes and other like articles.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction in which the globe or other article isheld suspended within the package, so that it will not come directly in contact with external objects, thereby preventing all dange'r of breakage.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
These two objects are accomplished by the construction shown, in which A is a casing formed of paper-board or other like material. This casing is of tubular form and may be quadrilateral or any other polygonal shape. Each of thesides ais bent inward, so as to form bearings for supporting the contained article. In order to securely hold the article in place, the sides a. are preferably partially cut away at b, thereby forming seats for the article. Thus where the article is of globular form, as shown, it will have an annular bearing on each of the four sides of the casing and will thereby be held securely in position.
To retain the casing in form, a band, such as B, is arranged around the same. This band is preferably of suificient width to cover the cut-away portion 2) and to protect the annular bearings upon thearticle from contact with external objects. The height of the casing is such that the article when in engage ment with its bearings will be held within the ends of the casing, so as to be out of contact with objects above or below the same.
In packing the article may be readily inserted within thecasing A, as the sides ethereof are free to spring outward whenever the band B is removed. After the article is in engagement with the bearings the band is placed in position and serves to hold the sides a in their bent form. The unpacking may be as readily effected by slipping off the band B,
after which the article may be drawn outfrom the casing A.
If desired, an outer protecting-casing, such as C, may be placed around the casing A, which outer casing may be either a formed box or merely a wrapping of paper-board. "Where the outer casing is used, the article will be suspended therein out of contact with all of the sides, so that it. will be efiectually guarded from external injury.
In place of cutting away a portion of the side to form the seat for the article saidside may be merely slitted for that purpose, or the bearing may be made in any other suitable way.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A packing-case for. spheroidal bodies comprising a polygonal open-ended casing adapted to freely receive the articles to be packed therein and having an annular seat for said article on the inner face of one of its sides, and a. surrounding band for holding said bearing side in an inwardly-bent form, whereby said seat is pressed against the contained article and will hold the latter from endwise movements.
2. A packing-case comprising a casing having a flat centrally-apertured side thereof bent at an angle inward to form an annular seat for the contained article and a surrounding band for holding said side in its bent form.
3. A packing-case comprising a polygonal casing having the sides thereof centrally apertured and bent inward to form annular seats for the. contained. article and an annular surrounding band for holding said sides in their bent form.
4. A packing-case comprising a quadrilat- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in eral open-ended casing having each of the sides presence of two Witnesses. thereof bent inwardand partially cut away to form an annular seat for the contained article I JAMES HINDE' 5 and a surroundingband for holding said sides Witnesses:
in their bent form and covering said cut-away ESTHER JANE FARRELL,
