IMPROVEMENT 'In 1i/immune ron-MAKING BUTTfHINeBS;
dlgs ,tbrhnle feierten-'tr it time ttcts ttntt mit mating ont at tintura;
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN-r Be ithnown that LHERY Di BLAI ;I:,`ot` New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butt-Machines; and to cnable others skilled in the art to make and use the sanne, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation by referring to the drawings, in which the same let-ters indicate likepzirts in eachofthe figures:
The nature of this invention consists in combining or uniting a feeding, gauging, and cuttingsdevice, to the.' driver-device, substantially such as patented to Thomas Tracy, March 19,;1867, No. 62,981,V sothatthe wire Ymay be drawn fromA acoil, gauged to agiven length, cut, and driven into the butt automatically. In theaccom-4 pany-ing drawings- I Figures 1 and-2 are-side elevations. Figure 3' is a top or plan view. l a is thc bed or 4framework ofthe machine. .b is the operating-shaft d is a driving-wheel secured tothe outer end of` the-shaft b. e is a cam, vnpdn the shaft I, the 4object of which iswto moveforward or arranged to work back and forth between the ways g.. This stock is reacted to itsresting-place by a spring or. other mechanical equivalent. lilla arevsliding'stocks, arranged to'work back andiforth between the ways z'. 7c is an arm, secured to thesto'ck z, and extends outward, and by the side .of the wheel cZ, and is acted upon by the cam or pin cZ, in c-rupon the side of said wheel, to move the stocks L 7L forward at each revolution of said wheel. Thcscstocls are reacted totheir resting-place by a spring, 7i, or its mechanical equivalent. These two stocks, 7L 7iar e connected together by a plate, m, ene end'of which is firmlyfsecured to thcrstock h. The object of the slit in the plate mis to allow the stock L to move back and forward on'the pin L alittle advance of' the stock 7L. n is a clamp-stock, secured firmly to the-stock 7L. 0.o are clamp-jaws, one ofwhich, o', sforined or secured rmly 'on the outer end of the stock n; the other, o', is securedloosely to the'fstock-n, l so as to oscillate upon a fulcrum-pin, p. It is also provided with'an arm, g, which entends back: overland is y I connected to the arni c by a screw or pin, q.
Thus it will bc seen that when-the steelt 7L,by the action of the .cam d', moves forward, it causes thejaw i 0 to gripe the wire `f/Land, by the connection mois moved forward the full citent of the driving-m'cchanismor cam d', and quickly yield its hold the instant it commences its backward motioni r is aholdinglstock or die, intowhich-the wire is introduced,l and throughwhich'it is driven by the action of the clamp-jaws o of. s is an oscillating-cutter, arranged so as to work closely .to the die r. Thiscutter is operated hy a cam'or 4wcdge'{shaped formation upon the end of the lever t. Said lever isa-c tuatcd by'a cam, t', sear'cd tothe sliding stockf.- This lever and cutter are reacted back to their resting-place bysprings. zais'a slide or cutyoi'i, arranged solas toallow onewire at 'a time todropintoa hopper, (said hopperbeing arranged when the machine is ready for operation.) -so'as to receive the wires as they drop from the cutter, and holdrthem in position directly over the channe1, protected on 4all. sides, so as to pre'cntV the wire from kinki-ng while being driven into the joint of the butt.l Thisslide or cutloi is operated by an'oscillating-lever, actuated by a camv upon onor-sident' the drivinglwheel d, and reactedby a spring, setas to allow onlyone wire to drop from the hopper into said.' channel. i v
The mechanism for holding the 'butt-blanks is arranged at the end of thc machine,dircctly in front oi' the driverf, so as to bring theoorice in the'blanks in' line with and close to the driver f when it is pushed forward to its extreme distance by the actionofthecam c. The length of the wire is determined. or regulated by the screw ar, which regulates or xes the backward motion ofthe stocksh 7i.
` Now when the machine' is in readiness for' operation, one end of' the wire is introduced into the machine through the clampjaws c o', thence into the holding-die '1'. vWhen* motion is given to the wheel d, the cam or pinoZ, acting upon thc-arm c, causesthe clamp-jaws 0 o to gripe the wire y,'and push it forward through the holding-die 1, by means-ofthe cam c, acting against the stoclrf, and at'thc same time, through the acti'oufof the cam e, cam t', wedgc-shaped lever t, the cutter s cuts and drops a wire into the hopper, in readiness to lbesepa rated, one at a time, by the action ofthe cutoff at, and driven into the joint of a -butt by the drive'rf.'
havi'ngits bearings in the boxes ce. 'Y or its mechanical equivalent, Vsecured actuate theA stockf dndwiresdriverf, which are machine, gauged and cut Thus by the combined action of the mechanism described, the wire is fed into the thus greatly facilitating to a. proper or desired length, and driven successively into the joint of butt-blanks, the manufactnre'of butts.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, constructien, others skilled to make and use the same therefrom.
I claim the jaws o o', arranged upon the stock h, and actuated by cam d', through the stock h', arm lc, plato m, or their equivalents, to feed the wire y into the holding and cutting-die a', substantially as amlfor the pui'- pose described.
I clain1,'in combination motion of thcstock h, whereby the I claim the combination of the cams e t', lever t, shear s,
of vthe. shaft; b, and all eenstxucted and arranged substantially as described.
. HENRY D. BLAKE. [L 5.]
and advantage'of this improvement, so as to enable with the above, the screw 3:, or its equivalent, for fixing the extent of the backward length of the wires. being cut is regulated.
