SHOW-CASE.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, STEPHEN E. PARRISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates particularly to showcases of the type wherein the top is movably secured to the body, so that access may be had to the interior of the case from either the front or rear side thereof; and it consists in the novel construction of the top whereby it may be easily and noiselessly operated and in the peculiar construction and combination of the various parts of the case, as will be hereinafter described.

In the drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section therethrough, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 00 w of Fig. 1.

The reference-letter A designates the casebody, which may be of any approved construction, comprising a suitable base B, a transparent front C, and ends D, framed in wood or metal in the usual manner, and sliding transparent doors E and F, forming the rear side of the case. From the construction as set forth it will be apparent that the top may be moved or shifted to provide access to the interior of the case by a person standing either at the rear or at the front side thereof and that skewing of the top during its travel is prevented by reason of the engagement of the rolling-bearings in the parallel ways. These features produce a deslrable construction of show-case superior and more easily operated than any now in use, and by reason of the simplicity and novel arrangement of its parts it may be made approximately as cheap as the ordinary display-case of the same size and finish.

To prevent the tipping up of the front end of the top when moved backward into the position shown in Fig. 1, I have provided hook members J, angle shaped in form, which depend from the members it and a of the top and engage with the under sides of the top rails a and b. Means are also provided for holding the top in its closed position. Preferably the lock comprises a rod Z, extending centrally and transversely of the body and having bearings in the front and rear top rails thereof, as shown. The rod projects beyond the rails and carries upon its projecting portions laterally extending members on and 0. These members constitute the handles for operating the lock, and the inner member mserves as a locking-lug, being adapted when turned upwardly to engage the rear member n of the top.

From the description of my invention it will be seen that on account of the simplicity of construction of the case it may be easily and cheaply manufactured. Furthermore, by recessing the top of the case-body and setting the top within the recessed portion the lower edges of the top are concealed, and thus a more finished and attractive appearance is given to the case.

What I claim as my invention is 1. In a show-case, the combination with a body comprising abase, front and end sections, of rails forming the top portions of the end sections and case-front, the end tops being recessed and the recessed portions being in turn longitudinally grooved, a top arranged within the recessed portions for horizontal reciprocation and having grooves formed in its under side registering with the grooves in the end rails to form raceways therebetween, antifriction devices in said raceways and means carried by the top and engaging one of the side sections for preventing upward tilting of the top when in its open position.

In a show-case, the combination with an open-top body, comprising a base, side and end sections, of a top slidably mounted upon the body, raceways formed between the upper edges of the end sections and the under surface of the end portions of the top, antifriction devices in said raceways, and means car'- ried by the top and engaging one of the side sections for preventing upward tilting of the top when in its open position.

3. In a show-case, the combination with the body, comprising a base, and side and end sections, of a top mounted upon the body for horizontal reciprocation, antifriction-bearings interposed between said top and body, and hook members carried by the top and engaging the side sections. I

4. In a show-case, the combination with the body comprising the base, ends, and sides, of parallel ways at the upper edges of the ends, a top mounted upon the body for horizontal reciprocation, antifriction-bearings interposed between the ways and'the top, and hooks depending from the top and engaging the under sides of the ways.

5. In a show-case, the combination with the body comprising front and rear side sections, ends, and a base, of a top mounted upon the body for horizontal reciprocation, antifriction-bearings interposed between said top and body, and a lock, operable from the front and rear of the case, for holding the top in its closed position.
