SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,322, dated March 22, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, EMERSON B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and 'a resident of Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Drill-Ohuck, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to chucks in which a pair of jaws are mounted to slide toward or from each other on the operator turning a screw-rod having a right and left hand thread in mesh with the jaws.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved chuck having a supplementary device for engaging the grippingjaws to insure an exceedingly strong and firm grip of the jaws on the drill or other tool to be held in the chuck.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the inventionis represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of. reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the sliding blocks for engaging the gripping-jaws. ,Fig; 4 is an edge View of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of one side of the separated grippingjaws, and Fig. 6 is a like view of the other side of the gripping-jaws.
The body A of the drill-chuck is'formed with the usual diametrical groove in which are mounted to slide toward and from each other gripping-jaws B B, provided at one side with screw-threads C O, engaged by the right and left hand threads of a screw-rod D, mounted to turn in the usual manner in the body A, so that when the screw-rod D is turned the jaws B B are caused to slide toward or from each other, according to the direction in which the screw-rod D is turned. On the other side of the jaws B B (see Fig. 5) are formed guideways B B, engaged by sliding blocks E E, formed on their outer sides with 5 screw-threads E in mesh with the right and cle held between the jaws.

The screw-rod Fis adapted to be turned by the operator so as to move the slide-blocks E E toward or from each other in the guideways B B of the jaws B B. Now in using the device the screw-rod F is first turned, so as to slide the blocks E E the desired distance outward to allow of turning the screw-rod D and sliding the jaws B B outward-into an open position for the insertion of the drill or other tool to be held in the chuck. When this has been done, the screw-rod D is turned in the reverse direction to 'move the jaws B B toward each other to firmly grip the tool, and then the other screw-rod, F, .is turned by the operator to causethe blocks E E to slide inward in the guideways B B until the inner ends of the blocks engage the inner walls of the guideways B B to exert a pressure on the jaws B B to move the latter toward each other, and thereby produce a further firmer grip of the jaws B B on the tool or other arti- Now from the foregoing it will be seen that the jaws B B are acted on on both sides for firmly gripping the tool or other article, so that no undue torsional strain is bad on the jaws B B and at thesame time the jaws firmly grip the article to be held in the chuck. It is expressly understood, however, that the blocks E onlyexert a pressure on the jaws B B to move the latter toward each other; but the said blocks are not capable of moving the jaws apart, it being understood that this function is reserved for the screw-rod D, which when turned in one direction moves the jaws B B outward and when turned in the opposite direction moves the jaws inward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A drill-chuck having jaws, means engaging one side of the jaws for moving the same simultaneously toward and from each other, the said jaws having guideways on the other side, separate sliding blocks engaging said guideways and formed on their outer sides with right and left hand screw-threads re spectively, and a screw-rod having right and left hand threads in mesh with the threads on the outer sides of the blocks, the said blocks being arranged to move in and out on the said screw-rod, the guideways having shoulders at their inner ends adapted to be engaged by the said blocks to move the jaws toward each other, independent of the means on the other side, as set forth.
2. A drill chuck having gripping jaws mounted to slide, an operating screw-rod engaging one side of the jaws for moving the same simultaneously toward and from each other, a second screw-rod mounted to turn in the chuck-body, but held from longitudinal movement, and sliding blocks separate from the jaws and screw-rod, the jaws having stops or shoulders adapted to be engaged by the blocks, the said sliding blocks being moved toward and from each other simultaneously by the said screw-rod, as set forth.
3. A drill-chuck provided with jaws having guideways on one side, sliding blocks movable independent of the jaws and engaging said guideways, the said blocks being formed on their outer sides with right and left hand screw threads respectively, a screw rod mounted to turn in the chuck-body but held from longitudinal movement, the said rod being out of contact with the said jaws, the said screw-rod having right and left hand threads in mesh with the threads of the said blocks, to move the blocks simultaneously toward or from each other, the jaws having shoulders at the inner ends of the guideways forming stops adapted to be engaged by the inner ends of the said blocks to move the jaws toward each other, as set forth,
