PATENT is OFFICE.
WINDOW-SC EEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,294, dated March 22, 1904.
\ Application filed November 9, 1903. Serial No. 180,430; (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER Gon'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window-screens, and comprises simple means whereby a screen may be easily applied to and removed from a window and held in locked relation while closed or open, and so constructed that it may be easily and quickly applied to any window or door open- The invention comprises various details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims. 7
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this invention, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved screen. Fig. 2 -is a cross-sectional view on'line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking mechanism.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, Adesignates the frame of a window of ordinary construction, and secured to the inner faces of said frame are strips B, having longitudinal grooves C therein, which extend substantially the length of said strips and adjacent to one edge. These strips are adapted to be positioned parallel to each other and coming in stock may be easily applied and secured to any window-frame.
D designates guide-plates which are fastened to one face of the screen, and their outer ends project beyond the adjacent edge of the screen-frame and are adapted to engage in one of said longitudinal grooves Cfor the purpose of guiding and holding the screen in place. The opposite edge ofthe screen has a latchcasing E, the cover of which has a transverse slot E, and F is a latch working in a recess in said casing, and a spring K is fastened at one end to'the casing, and its other end bears yieldingly-against the inner end of said latch for the purpose of throwing it to its farthest outward limit. A handle N is fastened to said latch and projects through the transverse slot in the cover of said casing and serves to guide the latch and to limit its outer throw by said handle coming in contact with the outer end of the recess in the casing.
The'latch is adapted to engage the longitudinal recess opposite the recess engaged by the plates D and to guide one edge of the screen as it is raised or lowered. -The recess in which the spring-actuated latch engages is of such a depth as to hold the latch from moving to its outer limit, excepting when it comes opposite the recess 0, in which the latch is adapted to be thrown by the springv to hold the screen either closed or open, as may be desired, While two recesses are shown for the reception of the spring-actuated latch, it will be understood that any number of these may be provided, if desired, to hold the screen at different heights.
By the con'structionof a screen embodying 'the features of my invention it will be noted that the same maybe easily applied to any window, and by the simple construction of apparatus the screen maybe quickly removed when desired for any purpose by simply throwing thellatch back out of groove and removing the plates from the opposite edge of the groove in the strip secured to the windowframe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A screen for windows comprising in combination with the frame of a window, strips secured to the inner faces thereof and provided with longitudinal grooves, a screen-frame, plates secured thereto and projecting beyond the edge thereof, and adapted to be guided in one of said grooves, and a latch on the opposite edge of the screen adapted to be guided in the other groove, as set forth.
2. A screen for windows comprising in combination with the frame of a window, strips secured to the inner faces thereof and having longitudinal grooves, one of which is provided with recesses in the bottom thereof, plates secured to the screen-frame and projecting beyond one edge thereof adapted to be guided in one of said grooved strips, a spring-actuated latch and casing therefor mounted upon the opposite edge of the screen, said latch adapted to be guided in one of said grooved strips, and to seat in one of said recesses to lock the screen, as set forth.
3. A window-screen comprising in combination with grooved strips adapted to be attached to the casing of a window or door, one of said grooved strips being provided with recesses in the bottom thereof, plates secured to said screen projecting beyond one edge thereof and designed to be guided in one of said grooved strips, a casing secured to the opposite edge of the screen, a spring-actuated latch mounted in said casing, a handle projecting from the latch and guided in a transverse slot in the covering of the casing, the end of said slot adapted to limit the outer throw of the latch, the latter adapted to be guided in one of said grooved strips and to seat in one of said recesses, whereby the screen may be locked, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
