UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES Gr. MITCHELL, OF CHARLEROI, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT Fon ATHLETIC SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I7543673, dated March 15, 1904. Application and March 31, 1903. serial 110.150,393. (No model.)
To a/Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleroi, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Attachments for Athletic Shoes, of which improvement the following is a specication.
This invention relates to certain n`ew and useful improvements in shoe attachments, and more particularly to an attachment for athletic shoes on which there are usually cleats or spikes, according to what line of sport they are to be used for. In shoes of this character the cleats or spikes are often a source of annoyance to the wearer and destruction to the floors and carpets when the same are worn when not actually engaged in sport, and to obviate this trouble without the necessity of changing from athletic shoes to house or street shoes I provide suitable pads which may be applied over the cleats or spikes, thereby presenting much the same sole-surface as an ordinary shoe.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of thisspecification, in which like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an athletic shoe, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional v'iew through a heelpad, showing clamping means in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the heel-pad with clamping members. Fig. 4 is a toe-pad and clamping members.
In the accompanying drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates a shoe on which are attached heel and toe cleats-2 and 8, respectively. 'Ihe cleats illustrated in the drawings are of the type usually used on base-ball shoes, although the invention might be applied to spiked or running shoes or any other form of projections applied to the sole of the lslhcs for the purpose of securing a better foot- The cleats illustrated have three prongs or projections extending at right angles to the sole of the shoe, and correspondingly-located apertures 4 4 4 in the heel-pad 5 and apertures 6 V6 6 in the toe-pad 7 are provided, the pad being of a greater thickness than the length of the prong or projection. These pads may be made of leather, rubber, wood, or any other suitable material. f
The heel-pad is made, preferably, of two materials, which may be joined together in any suitable manner. ,i
The manner of securing the pads to the shoe consists in forming apertures 12 12 in the sides of the pad and inserting therein tension- .springs 14 14, which are secured at their inner `may be made in the details thereof without departing from the general spirit thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,V is- An attachment for shoes Ycomprising a pad made up of two sections of material fastened together and provided with spur-receiving apertures, the lower layer of said material having horizontally-disposed apertures, a spring seated in said apertures, and bracket-shaped hooks actuated by said springs and designed to engage over the sole of the shoe, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES Gr. MITCHELL. In presence of- ALEXANDER HUDsPITH, F. O. HENZI.
