To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, J OSEPH GRANT REDDICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Stoppers for Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. I
In the forms of non-refillable bottles which have come to my notice wherein a locking plate or seal is used which is forced into an annular groove or depression of the bottleneck to prevent the removal of the cork positioned therebeneath it is necessary to break the bottle-neck to remove the contained liquid and are consequently unfitted for use except where the entire contents are to be immediately withdrawn.
To overcome the above-noted objection that is, to provide an efiective stopper which will prevent the refilling of the bottle without the destruction of the bottle or its stopper and yet permit the contents to be drawn off by degreesmy invention has been designed.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a portion of a bottle with my invention applied thereto, showing the valve closed. Fig. 2 is a similar, but inverted view, to show the valve open. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively perspective views of the valve and its seat.
Referring to the drawings by letters, C indicates a cap having a cylindrical central valve-chamber b, a reduced upper orifice c for the reception of a stopper m, of cork or other suitable material, and an enlarged opposite end d, forming a socket to receive the end of the neck of the bottle B, to which it is applied.

making a sliding fit within the said chamber and having peripheral openings or serrations h for the passage of liquids therethrough.
S is a disk plate provided with a central aperture 8, formed toregister with the end 4; of the valve, so as to make a liquid-tight seat therefor when the bottle is in the position shown in Fig. 1. Z represents lugs or studs projecting from the top of the said valve-chamber for the purpose of intercepting the valve when it is opened by inverting the bottle, as shown in Fig. 2, and permit unobstructed passage for the contained liquid therebeneath.
Any suitable metal may be used to construct the aforesaid cap, valve, and valve-seat; but I find that aluminium is well adapted to the requirements on account of its light weight and other qualities.
In assembling the parts I preferably interpose a washer w, of cork or other suitable material, between the plate S and the bottle to prevent any leakage thereat, and after this plate and the valve are placed in position the cap is secured thereover and to the bottle-neck by turning the peripheral wall of the socket beneath the circumferential head or enlargement is of the neck.
The operation of the invention will .be understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, where the valve is respectively shown closed and open. In the former case it is impossible to pour anything into the bottle; but by invertingothe bottle, as in Fig.2, the contents of the 1 bottle may be'readily poured therefrom. It may be mentioned that the cork m is simply used as a safety-stopper in transshipment of the goods or while in storage to prevent the accidental outflow of the bottles contents should the same be upset and also prevent the ingress of dirt within the cap. I
The uses and advantages of the invention are obvious. For instance, all bottle goods, like table condiments or liquors, can be protected from dilution or substitution of a spurious article, as it is impossible to charge a bottle pro vided with my invention after the cap is in place without destroying or mutilating the latter and yet its contents can be poured out from time to time as required.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class set forth, the combination with a cap having a reduced dischargeorifice, means for securing the cap to the mouth of a bottle such means comprising a socket adapted to be turned or flanged beneath an enlargm'ent upon the neck of a bottle, a valve provided with an annular collar and adapted to be seated and make a liquid-tight closure with a valve-seat, and said valve-seat, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a seal or stopper for bottles, consisting of a metal cap, means to secure the cap to the mouth of a bottle, a valve positioned internally of the cap said valve comprising a cylindrical main portion terminating in a semiglobular end and a flaring end and having intermediate its length an annular serrated collar, and a disk-shaped plate provided with a central aperture registering with the semiglobular end of the valve, substantially as set forth. 3. As a new article of manufacture, a seal or stopper for bottles comprising in combination, a cap C consisting of a valve-chamber 6 having at one end a reduced orifice 0 and at the other end a socket d, the studs Z, a valve V having a middle cylindrical part 0, a semiglobular end 1) and an opposite flaring end f, a guide-collar h, and a disk plate S provided with a central aperture 8 registering with the contiguous end of the valve, substantially as set forth.
