SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 754,536, dated March 15, 1904.

Be it known that I, BYRON B. BILLMYER, a.

citizen of the United States,-residing at Wardensville, in the county of Hardy, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Back-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v

This invention relates to back-rests, and more particularly to that class known as foldable back-rests, and has for its object to provide a device of this nature for use in connection with benches and "other seats which are not provided with supports for the back which will be simple of construction and cheap of manufacture and which may be carried from place to place and quickly attached to and detached from benches and similar seats.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which/like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device with the back raised in position for use. Fig. 2 isa front elevation ofthe device folded. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig.1.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a seat 5, having transverse braces 6 and 7 secured to the under face thereof and projecting slightly beyond the rearward edge of the seat, their forward ends 8 and 9 being bent downwardly and rearwardly in hooked form, as shown. The rearward ends 10 and 11 of the braces are turned upwardly to form lugs 12 and 13, and to these lugs are hinged a pair of uprights 14 and 15.' To the upper ends of the uprights l4: and 15 are hinged a second pair of metallic braces 16 and 17, and to these there is secured a back 18.

The hinges mentioned are of the kind used in the hinged supports of carriage-tops and the like-that is, they consist of two members 19 and 20, the member 20 being reduced at its end and rounded, as shown, and having a shoulder 21 projecting from one of its sides. The member 19 is bifurcated to receive the reduced portion of the member 20 and is rounded upon its end similarly to its first member.

The spaced portions 21 and 2 2 of the member 19, which receive between them the reduced portion of the member 20, have alining perforations 23 therethrough, which aline with a perforation through a reduced portion of the member 20 to receive a pivot-pin 24:. Themember 19 carries a shoulder 26, which when the two members are in alinement abuts against theshoulder 20 to prevent movement of the two members toward each other in one direction. 7

The hinged connection between the lugs 10 and 11 and the uprights 14: and 15 is such that the uprights maybefolded downwardly and =-forwardly above the seat 5, the construction of the hinges preventing rearward movement.

The braces 16-and 17 are so hinged to the uprights 14 and 15 that they, together with the back 18, may be folded downwardly against the forward faces of the uprights 1a and 15,

hand to permit of such folding the members 14 and 15 have laterally-projecting lugs 16 and 17, to which the braces 16 and 17 are hinged.

In folding the device for transportation the back 18 is folded downwardly against the uprights 14 and 15, and these uprights are then folded downwardly upon the seat 5, in which position the back 18 will lie between the uprights and the seat, the lugs 10 and 11 providing a space therefor. As is the case with the hinged connection between the uprights and the braces 6 and 7 the hinges which connect the braces 16 and 17 with the upright are so ment of these braces and the back 18. The hooked ends 8 and 9 of the braces 6 and 7 are engaged with the front edge of a bench, and- 18 will cause the forward edge of the seat to tip slightly upward, which will cause the sharpened points 8 of the hooked ends 8 and 9 to'engage the under side of the bench and prevent accidental displacement of the device.

In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
