JAMES J. BUTTS AND. A. S. STONE, OF PLAINVIEW, MINNESOTA.
Letters Patent No- 75,361, dated March 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN UNIVERSAL JOINT.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, JAMES J. BUTTS and A. S. STONE, of Plainview, in the county of Wabasha, and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Joints; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a section view 'of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the joint, showing it. resting in the end of one of the arms.
Figure 3 is an end view of one of the arms.
A represents the arms of my joint, which are secured together by means of a flanged ball, B, in such a manner as to allow them a free lateral and vertical motion. These arms are formed of two separate and distinct pieces, so that the ball can be inserted or removed at pleasure, and are held together by means of the bolts C. Running laterally across the end of each of these arms there is a wide semicircular opening, in which the hall B rests, as seen in fig. 2. Running at right angles with this opening thereis a semicircular groove, as seen in fig. 3, which has a projecting edge upon both sides, the object of which will be seen hereafter.
B represents the ball, which binds the two ends of the. arm together. Running about three-quarters of the distance around this joint, at right angles with each other, are two projecting edges, which have grooves cut on both the upper and lower surface, as seen by red lines in fig. 2. Into these grooves on the ball the projecting edges of the grooves in the end of the arm fit,'thereby allowing a free lateral and vertical motion to the arms.
This joint is peculiarly adapted to the tumbling-rods of threshers, and to machinery of all kinds.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ball'B and arms A A, constructed and connected substantially in the manner and used for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we havr hereunto set our hands, this 18th day of June, 1867.

A. S. STONE.
