RUBBIG AND POLISHING STONE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,530, dated July 30, 1850.

To all whom t may concern the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improv'ed Rubbing-Bed for Fac-` ing Stone; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description of my invention.

The nature of my invention consists in a new arrangement and method of securing and holding blocks of stone upon a rubbing bed, for the purpose of facing them, the blocks being placed and held in such manner that they are continually moved about on the bed, over the whole surface, wearing it equally in all parts, so that it remains per-- fectly level, and produces a corresponding flat and true face tothe stone. By the old method of fastening the stone,'the surface of the rubbing bed is soon irregularly and uneven, rendering' it impossible to face a stone true. These defects and ditculties are entirely obviated by my plan.

In order that others skilled in the art, may understand and use my invention, I shall proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification. i

The rubbing bed A, is made and operated in the usual way, rendering any special description of it unnecessary.

The bed frame B, B, is so constructed as to support two windlasses C, C, on opposite sides, to which are attached ropes or chains a, a; and on the ends of the windlasses are ratchets b, b, for holding them in their place.

The block of stone D, having been placed on the hed, it is fastened by passing around it the chain tv, the length of which is regulated by winding more or less upon the windlass. The stone may be made to play nearer or farther from the center of the bed, by shortening or lengthening the chain, and when the bed is in motion, it swings to and fro over the face, by the combined action of the centrifugal and centripetal forces upon it, and requires no handling until it is completely dressed.

rubbing bed, over the old and common method are very obvious.

fhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by l,Letters Patent is Attaching the stone D, to be faced to a chain a., one end of which is attached to awindlass C, by which it may be lengthened or shortened: the stone being left free so as to be continually changing its position on the bed, during the operation of rubbing, by which an uniform and even wear is pro duced on the bed and a true face given to the stone in the manner substantially as described.
