SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,372, dated February .2, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BOYLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elk Mountain, in the county of Carbon and State of 'VVyoming, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rails, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to railway-rails, and particularly to a rail joint or splice; and the primary object of the invention is-toprovide a joint of new and improved construction and simple and effective arrangement of parts whereby the use of fish-plates, chairs, and other similar attachments may be avoided and pounding of the car-wheels on the contiguous rail ends, as well as sinkingof the latter at the joints, is prevented.
A further object of'the invention is to provide a rail joint or splice having interlocking view of portions of rails connected by a joint or splice embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the extremity of one rail. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the extremity of the interlocking rail.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts 1n the several views.
The numerals 1 and 2, respectively, designate two rails, the terminal of the rail 1 having the base-flange 3 cut away transversely ina horizontal plane, as at 4, to provide a seat which includes a transverse slot 5, the flange having a vertical opening 6 therethrough near the outer end of the said slot. The seat 4 and slot 5 terminate at an inner guard-rib 7, extending longitudinally of the rail in line with the further side of the web, as illustrated by Fig. 2. The terminal of the rail 1 where the seat 4 and slot 5 are formed has the web cut away, as at 9, and the under portion of the head 10 of the rail is shouldered,
as at 11, and constructed with a transverse slot 12. By shouldering the under portion of the head of the rail the free extremity of the latterabove the seat4 and slot 5 is reduced, and at the same time an interlocking member 13 is produced.
The terminal of the rail 2 has the baseflange 14 thereof cut away at one side close to the web 15, the flange being removed a distance equal to the depth of the undercut portion of the rail-terminal 1. The opposite part of the flange 14 of the rail-terminal 2 is constructed with avertical opening 16, which is adapted to coincide with the openings 6 in the terminal of the rail 1, and at a suitable distance inwardly from the end of the rail 2 a slot 17 is out transversely through the lower portion of the flange 14 and terminates at the opposide side coincidently with the vertical wall 18 of the reduced portion of the flange 14.
The formation of the slot 17 provides a look ing member 19 adjacent to the end of the rail 2 to fit in the slot 5, and the seat 4enters the said slot 17 when the two rail-terminals are associated. The end of the head 20 of the rail 2 is cut away to form an interlocking terminal 21 to fit in the slot 12 of the overhanging portion of the head 10 of the rail 1. The head ,20, adjacent to the terminal 21, is also transversely slotted, as at 22, to a suflicient depth to form a receptive means for the locking member 13 of the head 10 of the rail 1, the proportions of the interlocking terminals of the two rails being such as to permit the ends of the Webs to closely contact, as shown by- Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the terminal of the rail 2 is moved laterally into the opening formed in the terminal of the rail 1 by removing the web and that the said'terminal of the rail 2 when moved laterally into the end of terminal of the rail 1 will be limited in such movement by the straight wall 18 of the cut-away portionof the flange 14 contacting with the guard-ribs 7. When this contact between the said wall 18 and guarddinal movement of the rail ends will be pre-' vented in view of the interlocking projections in the contiguous parts, and thus the use of a fish-plate or other similar fastening means is avoided.
Rails equipped with the improved joint or splice can be readily assembled, and if at any time it becomes necessary to separate the rails the removal of the single fastening device engaging the openings 6 and 16 will permit such operation to be readily pursued.
Changes in the proportions and dimensions may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A rail-joint, comprising rail-terminals, one of which has the web removed to permit the head to overhang the base-flange, said head being shouldered and formed with a transverse slot and the base provided with a seat and a slot extending transversely over a portion thereof and terminating at a longitudinal rib, and the other rail end having its base-flange cut away at one side and formed with upper and lower slots, and reduced portions to enter the opening in the end of the other rail and interlock with the latter.
2. A rail-joint, consisting of rail ends, one of which has an opening extending therethrough between the head and flange, and a longitudinal rib extending upwardly from the base, the other rail end having the flange cut away at one side and formed with an under transverse slot and the head reduced and transversely slotted and adapted to be inserted laterally into the end of the first-mentioned rail, and a single fastening passing through portions of both rail ends.
3. A rail-joint, consisting of rail ends, one of which has an opening cut therethrough between the base-flange and head and also provided with a longitudinal rib rising from the base-flange at one side of the center, the other rail end having upper and lower transverse slots and a portion of one side of the baseflange thereof removed and adapted to contact with the rib, and means for fastening the interlocked rail ends.
