SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,992, dated February 2, 1904.
Application filed October 14, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, (Manhattan,) county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Childrens Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a childs hat provided with a textile covering which may be readily removed from the supporting-frame. Thus the covering may be laundered whenever necessary, and, moreover, coverings of various designs may be combined with the same frame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is perspective view of the hat-frame; Fig. 2, a plan of the hat-covering; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the hat complete; Fig. 4, a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 5 a detail cross-section on line 5 5, Fig. 2.
The letter A represents a hat-frame composed of a stiff crown and a stiff rim. The sides of the crown a converge from top to bottom, so that a reentrant and preferably an acute angle is formed at the junction between crown and rim. The rim 0, is made of double thickness and is reinforced by a number of concentric annular stays or wires (0 Fig. 4.
The covering B is made of a flexible and washable textile fabric and is adapted to cover the crown and rim of the frame A. It is of circular form and provided with a concentric hem or pocket 6, which contains a draw-string 0. This hem divides the covering into a circular inner section b and an annular outer section I2 I prefer to make these two sections of two different pieces of fabric that overlap at their contiguous edges, Fig. 5, and are here connected by two concentric lines of stitching (Z cl, between which the hem Z) is formed. For the inner section b I use a plain piece of fabric, while for the outer section b a ruflied piece of fabric is employed.
In use the covering B is placed upon the frame A, and then the ends of the string 0 are drawn out and tied, so as to gather the covering around the crown. In this position the hem Z) and string 0 will be received within the acute angle of the frame A between rim and Serial No. 176,957. (No model.)
crown, and owing to the flare of the latter the covering will not be apt to become unseated by slipping upward over the crown. Thus the inner section b of the covering will completely envelop the crown a, while the outer section b will be supported upon and will conceal the top and edge of rim (0. Owing to the reinforcement of the latter by the wires (0 the weight of the rufi les will not be liable to bend the rim downward.
If the covering is to be washed, it is first detached from the frame by loosening the string 0 and is then spread into a plane, Fig. 2.
It will be seen that by my invention I am enabled to use coverings of various designs upon the same frame and that the coverings may be readily removed from the frame whenever they are to be laundered.
IVhat I claim is- 1. A childs hat composed of a hat-frame having a rim and a crown that joins the rim at a reentrant angle, and of a removable circular covering having a concentric hem, and a draw-string within the hem, substantially as specified.
2. A childs hat composed of a hat-frame having a rim and a flaring crown that forms an acute angle with the rim, and of a removable circular covering having a concentric hem, and a draw-string within the hem, substantially as specified.
3. A childs hat composed of a hat-frame having a reinforced rim and a flaring crown, and of a removable circular covering having a concentric hem, and a draw-string within the hem, substantially as specified.
4. A childs hat composed of a hat-frame having a rim and crown, and of a removable circular covering having an outer rufiied section, a concentric hem, and a draw-string within the hem, substantially as specified.
