PATENT OFFICE.
FAN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 750,904, dated February 2, 1904.
Application filed August 4, 1903. Serial No. 168,179. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention comprises particularly a fan adapted to be removably attached to shafts, and is especially useful in factories and shops, where it may be attached to a shaft wherever desired. It is characterized by great simplicity and cheapness and is adapted for use in any place desired where there is a rotating shaft.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the device, and Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the fan comprises a blade 6, having acentral longitudinal groove or corrugation 7, properly shaped to fit over a shaft, as indicated at 8.
At 9 are indicated spring-arms, riveted to the blade on one side and free on the other. These arms are curved to fit over the shaft on the opposite side tothe blade and by their spring action bind the blade to the shaft, so that it revolves therewith, and thereby serves the purpose intended.
The arms will yield to permit the shaft to pass under their free ends, so that the fan may be put on or taken off when desired or used on shafts of difierent sizes.
It is obvious that the fan may be attached to a shaft or moved from one shaft to another quickly and easily, and. the simplicity and cheapness of the construction are advantageous, particularly in large factories where it is desirable to have a large number of fans, as one for each operator or worker.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A portable fan adapted for attachment to various shafts, comprising a blade having a groove to receive one side of a shaft, and spring-clips secured to the blade on one side the groove and having free ends extending across the same, and arranged to bear against the other side of the shaft, to detachably hold the blade on the shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
