SPECIFXCATION ormllgpalt of Letters Patent No. "IQQASS, dated January 12, 1904.
Application led June 8, 1903. Serial No. 160,629. (No model.)
y #altem zit may concern:
.own that L ROBERT CAMrBnLL Sril- Vnxson., subiect ot' the King' of Great Britlend, residing' at Rosehill, London narnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, have certain new and useful improvement in Repeating Rifles, of which the i'ollowing' is a specification.
inventionrelates to repeating rii'ies such re used for sporting and other purpe'ts; and it has for its object to provide an :prof trnction ot repeating' mechanism comp few moving' parts, so as to Simplify the mechanism generally and to allow or' g increased rapidity of lire.
.ccempanying' drawings, which illus-- the invention, Figure l is a vertical sec- "t of a repeating' rifle constructed tion accor i to my invention. showing' the tiring ano lo ng mechanism. Fig'. 2 illustrates a detail hereinafter referred to.
As shown inthe drawings, the improved ride comprises the usual stock a and barrel .7). icing mechanism includes a tubular bolt I `o slide in a bolt-guide c', extending' breech end of the barrel partly over the 'stock c, the bolt c containing' a needle-pointed-striker CZ, which is pressed forward .by means'oi a spring (not shown) to project the striking-point through the forward end of the bolt to fire the cartridge in the barrel by percussion. The bolt has atrits under side a ldepending' lug e, which passes through a slot e in a bar f, constituting a coclring nece, (illustrated more particularly in Fig, 2.,) slotted to pass around or encircle the cartridgemag'a'zine g. The cooking-piece is carried i'orward to a sliding handle t under the barrel within convenient reach or the lett lhand in the tiring position. Willen the handle is drawn back, the rear end ot' the fcocling-piece'f down a lever lf, elevated by a spring 'voted at its forward end at ym. The f l of the lever fpasses into a slot in a itted to rise and fall in a vertical slot in the stock, its upper end passing' through.
back to open lup the breech by the continued movement ot' the cocking-piece f, which engages the lug e. A cartridge is then fed up into the breech from the magazine g, located thereunder, and furnished with a spring-actuated platform, or the cartridge may-be fed in by hand. On pushing forward the handle z, the bolt c is drawn forward by the engagement oii the end of thefslot e in the cockingpiece with the rear end of the depend ing lug e, the cartridge being' pushed home by the bolt into the breech end of the barrel. `When the bolt .C is thus pressed home, the bolt-check fn rises into the notch n', cut in the bolt, and locks the latter. During the forward motion of the bolt the striker d is held back by means or' a scar o, which rises through a slot in the lower part of the bolt-guide and bolt, the sear being pivoted at o in the stock and having an arm y), on which bears a spring q, and which larm is acted on by the trigger /r to disengage the scar and free the striker (l for firing. The trigger is so placed that a projection fr' on the same touches the lower part of the bolt-check nwhen the latter is depressed and holds the trigger immovable, so that the trigger can only be pressed wheny the bolt is fully closed and the check rises into position.
The magazine g may be charged by hand or from a charger or by means of a clip, which may be conveniently fitted into it when the breech is open.
Having now described my invention, what claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isY
l. in a repeating rifle the combination with the bolt sliding in a bolt-guide 'of a cocking'- piece connected to a handle and beneath the rifle-barrel, and having' its roar end arranged to engage a projection t9 move the bolt when the cooking-piece is reciprocated, a spring-supported lever pivotally mounted within the gun-stock and a bolt-check connected to said lever and operated by movement of the cocking-piece to release the bolt substantially as described. p
in a repeating rifle thel combination with the bolt sliding' in a bolt-guide ot' a cockingpicco having' a lsliding' handle beneath the rifleto, releases the 'bolt c, n'liiclithen drawn i barrel and a depending' lng' on the bolt passing througlia slot in its rear end, ii Springsupported lever pivoted within the gun-stock and having` a projection engaging the engl of l the waking-piece to depress the lever when l the eoeking-piece is drawn hack, and a. block having a slot for engagement with Said lever, the said block being adapted to rise nml fall in the slot in the Stock to engage a notch in the bolt substantially as described.
3. The combination with the Slidinglolt o1 a repeating rifle, of u bolt-cheek n, :i bolt-check lever connected tothe bolt-check, u spring/ l :1nd the trigger fr, said trigger having a pro- I5 Jeetion -r adapted to engage the lowerpart of the bolt-cheek when the latter is depressed.
l n wi .tness whereof I llave hereunto set my luind in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT CAMPBELL STEVENSON. Tw'iinesses:
