HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,253, dated January 12, 1904.

. To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J OHN BALLENBERGE and CHARLEs SCHEIDEMANTEL, cltizens of the United States of America, residing at Pitts-- burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hose-couplings, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby two sections of a hose may be easily, quickly, and effectually coupled together.
Another object of our invention is to provide a hose-coupler which will be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, and highly efficient in use.
Briefly described, our invention comprises a male and female member, the male member of which carries a tubular projection which snugly fits into a recess formed in the female member of the hose-coupling. The male member has secured to its sides a yoke which engages over the female member and securely holds the same in position.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved hose-coupler. Fig. 2is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the male member. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the yoke constituting the locking means.
To put our invention into practice, we provide a male member 1, which carries the tubular extension 2, said tubular extension engaging ina recess 3 formed in the female member 4. These members carry a central aperture 5 and have their ends knurled or grooved, as indicated at 6, to receive the hosesection. The male member 1 has its body portion 7 cut away on the top and under side, as indicated at 9, said cut-away portion forming shoulders 10.

The sides of the body portion 1 are cut away at the angles 11 and 12, forming beveled surcaces over which engage the beveled sides 1 1 of the yoke 15. This yoke is secured pivotally, as indicated at 16, to the body portion 17 of the The yoke 15 carries the side arms 18, which have apertures 19 formed in their outer ends,whereby they are secured to the body portion 17 as indicated at 16. Formed integral with the yoke 15 and extending outwardly therefrom is the handle or operating-lever 20. When our improved hosecoupler is in the coupled position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the beveled sides 14 of the yoke engage over the beveled surfaces 11 of the body portion 7 of the male member, the yoke 15 resting in the cut-away portion 10 formed in the top face ofthe body portion.
The manner of coupling our improved hosecoupler is as follows: The tubular extension 2 of the male member is inserted into the recess 3 formed in the female member 1, when the yoke 15 is drawn downwardly, the side arms 1& engaging over the beveled faces 11 of the body portion, this operation forcing.

While we have herein shown and described our invention in detail, it is obvious that we do not care to limit ourselves to the exact construction, as various slight changes may bemade therein without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hose-coupling comprising a maleand female member, the first-namedmember carrying an extension normally received in the last-named member, the body portion of the first-named member being cut away on its top and bottom to form shoulders, the sides being cut away to form inclined portions meeting centrally of said sides in the shape of a V, a locking member comprising a pair of side arms pivoted to the female member and a yoke straddling the male member, the sides of said yoke being inclined to conform to the inclined portions of the male member, and being notched adjacent the upper end of the yoke-arms, said inclined faces of the arms engaging said inclined portions, of the male member and receiving the apex of the V in said notches, and an operating-lever secured JOHN BALLENBERGER.
