SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,974, dated January 5, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW F. MCGRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tents, of which the following is a sp'eciication, such as Will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved tent which is simple in construction and operation and which may be used by camping parties, military authorities, and others; and'with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a tent constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the acompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is an end view of a tent made according to my invention; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view thereof; Fig. 4, a plan view extended of one of the parts from which my improved tent is made; Fig. 5, a similar view of another of said parts; Fig. 6, a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 a longitudinal section of a detail of the invention.
In the practice of my invention I provide two upright supports a, which in the form of construction shown consist of ordinary posts, having brace or stay cords a2, secured to the posts, pegs, or similar devices a3, and in this case the posts o. are set into the ground; but trees or other supports may be employed in place of the posts a.
Stretched between the posts a and connected therewith by rings or hooks 0,4 is a cord or cable b, and the connection between the cord or cable b and rings or hooks o4 is made by means of spring devices c, consisting, as shown in Fig. 7, of casingsc each end of which is provided with a hook c3, the Shanks of which pass int-o the casing c2 and are provided each with a head c4, and between the heads c4 of the shanks of the hooks c8 and the ends of the casing czare placed springs c5.
The body portion of the tent, which is desthe tent, while the side portions d5 thereof form the side walls of the tent, as clearly indicated in Fig. 6, while the strips d3 form eaves, and to these strips are secured staycords or similar devices e, which are connected with posts or pegs fv in the usual manner. Each of the transverse strips d2 is also provided, preferably, with an opening g, closed by a ap g2, and said transverse strips are provided at their adjacent edges with a ily h, and said transverse strips d2 are also connected by lacing, as shown at c', and in making this connection the ies h are gathered within the lacing,and this makes a secure connection.
The end transverse strips d2 of the body portion of the tent are provided with trianguiar aps or flies j, which form the ends of the tent, and which are connectedby lacing f2, and this connection may be made as closely as desired, as may also the separate tent section or strip.
It willthus be seen that my improved tent is composed of separate transverse sections or strips of flexible material supported bya cord or cable connected with suitable end supports, and when made in this way the tent may be taken down and packed in a very small space or receptacle whenever desired, and may be easily and conveniently set up whenever necessary, and by reason of these facts my improved tent is particularly adapted for use by traveling or camping parties and also by soldiers.
