FLUIDLPRESSURE REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming' part lof Letters Patent-No. 746,879, dated December 15, 1903. Application filed August l5, 1903'. Serial. No 169,634. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, MIRON Gr. REYNOLDS, a citizen4 of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison, State of In diana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fluid-Pressure Regulators, of which the followingV is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. n
This invention relates to a duid-pressure regulator, and particularly to a structure em- `adapted to operate a valve controlling the fluid-inlet.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction ofV valve for the inlet-opening whereby the same may be adjusted relative to the lever and may be free for universal 'movement in contacting with its seat.. n
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of bridge for supporting the operating-lever adapted to be supported entirely within the casing and without the necessity of extraneous securing devices. l
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

The letterA indicates the regulator-casing, which is provided with a cover A', secured thereto in any suitable manner, there' being interposed between the casing and cover a flexible diaphragm A2, such as is usually used in this art. Upon the upper-surface of this .diaphragm a plate A3 is provided, while bevoutlet openings of the casing.

spring A7, which bears at its lower end'upon 'and surrounds the head of the screw A5, while the upper end ot the spring is in contact with the adjusting-screw A8, threaded into the upper portion of the chamber A6, whereby the tension ot' the spring may be regulated. The lower portion of the bracket A4 is provided with pivoting-ears A9, between which a pivot B extends for securing thereto one end of the valve-leverr B. This lever B is pivotally mounted by means of a pivot B2, extending through the ears C of the bridge C, which bridge is composed of a plate Op?, seated at its opposite ends in recesses C3, formed inl the upper surfacev of the casing and within the outeredge thereof, so that the top plate A when applied vsecurely holds the bridge in position without the necessity of using any extraneous screws or securing devices or forming any openings in the casing for that purpose. The plate C2 is formed at one side witha curved edge C4 vto conform to the curvature of the diaphragm-chamber of the regulator and at its opposite edge with a recessed portion C5, in alinement with the inlet and The casing is provided at one side with an extended portion D, `having at its lower portion au inletopening D', provided with a suitable valveseat D2, while the cover is provided with an Y outlet-openingDS, preferably substantially in alinernent with the inlet D. Extending from Vbeneath the center of the diaphragm to this portion D is a depending recessed portion D4, adapted to receive the valve-lever B and permit its free operation. Y
. The free end of the valve-lever B is provided with a threaded aperture B3, into which an adj ustingscrew E is suitably threaded,and
provided at its opposite ends with a slot E or other suitable device for retaining the screw, while the lower end of the screw carries a valve block E2, provided with a suitable washer or valve E3, adapted to cooperate with This block may be connected with the screw in any desired manner;` but for the purpose of permitting a universal movement thereof the lower end E4 of the screw is curved and rests upon a horizontal seat of the block, while thev parts may be connected together' by a pivot-pin E,

passing through the walls of the block and through an aperture E7 in the end E4 of the screw, as shown in Fig. 1, said aperture having oppositely-curved Walls to permit the pin E6 to rock therein, and thus provide for a universal movement` of the block upon the screw.
In the operation of the invention the fluidpressure entering the inlet beneath the diaphragm raises the same, and thus operates the valve-lever to control the entrance of iiuid to the inlet, dependent upon the adjustment of the tension-screw above the diaphragm, by which the predetermined pressure in the system connected with the outlet is attained. It has been found, however, that this adjustment alone is not sufficient to attain the most desirable results for a constant pressure upon the service-line and that an independent adjustment of the valve is frequently necessary in order to secure an accurate operation. It
will be seen that by adjustably mounting the valve upon the free end of the lever the same can be varied in its relation to its seat, and the universal movement permitted by the valve-block connection with the screw allows the lever or composition washer to accurately t upon the seat, which is absolutely necessary to secure the most desirable operation of a regulator.` Furthermore, the manner of mounting the supporting-bridge for the valvelever avoids the use of all outside openings and the consequent possibility of leakage, as this bracket is mounted entirely within the casing, yet is easily accessible when the cover is removed, and the diaphragm or packing between the casing and its top eects a perfectly tight joint over and around the edges of the bridge.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration and also of the character of regulator to v which this invention is applied without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
, Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a casing having inlet and outlet openings in alinement, a movable member therein, a valve-operating member connected to said .member and having its free end disposed between said openings, and a valve adjustably mounted upon said member for vertical adjustment and for oscillation relative to the outlet-opening in the casing.
2. In a device of the class described, a casing, a movable member therein, a valve-operating lever connected to said member and having at its free end a threaded aperture therethrough, a screw adjnstably mounted in the free end of said lever and provided at its uppel end with means for effecting the rotation thereof, and a valve-block carried by said screw.
3. In a device of the class described, acasing, a movable member therein, a valve-operating lever connected to said member, a screw adjustably mounted in the free end of said lever, a valve-block carried by said screw, and means for permitting a universal movement of said block upon the screw.
4. In a device of the class described, a casing, a movable member therein, a valve-operating lever connected to said member, a screw adjustably mounted in the free end of said level', a valve-block carried by said screw, a curved lower end to said screw adapted to contact with a fiat face upon said block, and a pivot-piu passing through the block and an enlarged opening in the lower portion of said screw.
5. In a device of the class described, a casing provided upon its upper surface with recesses, a bridge-plate adapted to seat at its opposite ends in said recesses and provided with depending lugs, a Valve-operating lever pivoted between said lugs, means for operating said lever by fluid-pressure, and a coverplate adapted to fit upon said casing and retain said bridge-plate in position.
6. In a device of the class described, a casing provided at one side with an extension having an inlet-opening at its base, a depending chamber extending radially from the center of the casing to said extension, a coverplate for said casing having an outlet-opening in alinementwith the inlet, a diaphragm held between the cover and the casing, a pivoting-bridge supported from the upper face of the casing Within the outer edge thereof and having depending pivoting-lugs, a valvelever pivoted upon said bridge within said chamber and connected to said diaphragm, and a valve adjustably mounted in the free end of said lever above said inlet-opening.
7. In a device of the class described, acasing provided at one side with an extension having an inlet-opening at its base, a depending chamber extending radially from the center of the casing to said extension, a coverplate for said casing having an outlet-opening in alinementwith the inlet, a diaphragm held between the cover and the casing, a pivoting-bridge supported from the upper face of the casing within the outer edge thereof and having depending pivoting-lugs, a valvelever pivoted upon said bridge and connected to said diaphragm, a screw adjustably mounted inthe apertured free end of said lever, and a valve-block mounted upon said screw for universal movement upon the lower end of said screw relative to the inlet to the casing.
8. In a device of the class described, a casing having an extension at one side and a peripheral iiange, a bridge-plate adapted to seat at opposite ends in recesses formed at opposite sides of the extension of the casing and Awithin the outer edges of the flange thereof,
aA cover-plate for said casing adapted to rest uponand hold said bridge-plate in position, a valve in alinement with an opening in said IIO easing, a valveoperating lever pivoted to said bridge-plate, and means Within the easing for operating said lever by duid-pressure.
9. In a device ofthe class described', a easing, a diaphragm mounted therein having a plate upon its upper face, a cover-plate provided with a projecting spring-chamber having a threaded aperture at its upper endg'a spring within said chamber and bearing on said plate, an adjusting-screw mounted iu Said aperture to bear vupon the upper end of said spring, a valve-lever pivotally connected to the under face of said diaphragm, and a Valve carried by the i'ree end of said lever.
10. In a device of the class described, a oasing, a diaphragm mounted therein having a plate upon its upper face, a cover-plate provided With a projecting spring-chamber having a threaded aperture atv its end, a spring Within said chamber bearing on said plate, an adjusting-screw mounted in said aperture to bear upon the upper end of said spring, a bracket upon the under face of said diaphragm secured to the plate above the diaphragm, a bridge-plate supported from the top of the easing and provided with ears, a valve-lever pivotally mounted Ain said ears, and a valve mounted upon the free end of saidlever for universal movement relative thereto.V
