Patented December 1, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE- WERNIOKF. COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
VERTICAL FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,693, dates December 1, 1903.
Application iiled December 20, 1901. Seria-l No. 86,656. (lio model To ad whom t may con/cern.'
zen of'the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of.
Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Files, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part. of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of drawertiles contained in a cabinet with compartments for each drawer and designed to receive letters to be died therein vertically, or, it made shallower, to receive cards; and it has for its object the provision of a filing-drawer of this character which shall be both cheap and simple in construction and which will afford ready access to the filed letters or cards by reason ot' its having a front wall which composee the front ot the drawer and closes drawer aperture in the cabinet when the drawer is pnshedin and which is hinged at its lower edge, so that it can be tilted outward and down when the drawer is partly withdrawn from its cabinet-recess to free the papers held therein and to .give ready access to the same to permit any paper to be inspected or removed or a new one inserted, all as willY be hereinafter more fully set forth, and speciiically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the front portion of a drawer embodying my invention with the front wall raised and locked in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view with the front wall unlocked and lowered. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one corner of the front of the drawer with the parts in the position of Fig. l.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate identical parts in all the figures.
For filin g letters vertically I provide a deep drawer with a bottom A and side walls B, the same being preferably connected by a vertical back piece, (not shown,) but after theusual manner of this class of drawer-tiles. Hinged to thebottom of the drawer, as at a, is the front wall C, having a clearance-bevel bat its lower edge, so that the bottom edge of the and said front wall is also of a width to cover the front ends of the side walls, as seen in Fig.. 3, and its area is just s uiticient to close the front aperture of the drawer-opening in the cabinet when the drawer is pushed in to its fullest extent.
Secured to each side of the front wall adjacent to the inner sides ot the side walls B of the drawer is a plate D, preferably of sector shape and having a segmental slot?) near `its upper edge, with which a pin c, projecting from the inner side of the side wallB, engages. The length of this slot. limits the outward-swinging motion of the front wall O, as seen in Fig. 2, and permits it to be tilted or swung outward to an angle ot forty-tive degrees, more or less, to the bottom A.
A latch'between the front wall C and one of the side walls B serves to hold theV front wall locked up in avertical position against the side walls B when the drawer is pressed into its compartment, and when said latch is released the front wall C may be let down or tilted outward to the position shown in Fig.
from its compartment. As a simple and convenient form of latch I have provided a latchdog E, pivoted, as at CZ, to the front wall, and having a nose to engage a detent-piece e upon one of the side Walls B. Any other suitable form of latch, however, would answer as well.
The interior of the drawer is provided with the usual or any suitable sliding follower I, in this instance confined and sliding on a rod G, contained in a slot or Vopening in the bottom of the drawer after the manner of card-dies, which are provided with followers of this class and which are intended to hold papers which stand on end in the drawer pressed toward the front of the same, and which follower is made to move back as the number of papers are increased, all as will be readily understood.
The front wall ot the drawer is provided with any suitable operating handle or knob H for drawing it out or pressing it in.
For tiling letters or other long papers in a vertical position in a drawer of this character I have provided what seems to me the simfront Wall covers the bottom A of the drawer, Be it known that l, FRED W. TOBEY, a citi- 2 after the drawer has been partly withdrawn IOO plest means for accomplishing this purpose and at the same time for permitting the inspection, introduction, or removal of any let- The herein-described iiie-drawer composed of the bottom A, side walls B, front wall C hinged, as at a, with a beveled edge b to the bottoml A, the segmentally-slotted plates l`)v secured to the front wall C at each side, the pins c engaging the slots in said plates, the latch E pivoted to the inner side of the front wall C, and the detent-plate e upon the top edge of the side Wall B for engaging said latch when the front wall is closed, substantially as described.
FRED W. TOBEY.
