MINAS I-I. KASHIAN, OF AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
COM BlNATIQN CUTU N DER CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7%5,108, dated November 24, 1903.
application filed July 24, 1903. Serial No. 166,919. (No model.)
plates. or bars I; but when it is desired to T ctZZ whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MINAS l'I. KASHIAN, of lower the scat. C it is pulled forward until the Amesbnry, in the county of Essex and State said studs pass into the vertical parts of the 5.5 of Massachusetts, have invented new and usegrooves. The seat may then be pressed down ful Improvements in Combination Outunder against the resistance of springs II, inter- Oarriages,of which the following, takeninconposed between it and the bottom of the venection with the accompanying drawings, is hicle-body. Acatch E,attachedtothe wagona specification. body, holds the seat against rising above the 60 The object of this invention is to provide level ofthe sides 13. Each of these sidesis prosimple, convenient, durable, and satisfactory vided on top with a guideway F, consisting means for promptly convertingasingleseated of a longitudinal groove or recess covered by into a two-seated vehicle, or vice versa, at a longitudinally-slotted plate. This guidewill, without removing either of the seats way is interrupted in the middle, when the 65 therefrom or making any part of the vehicle seats are arranged as in Fig. 1, by a long and unsightly. deep depression or recess G, where the mid- To this end my invention'consists in the die of each side is cut away. Fig. 6 represents a detail per- The rear seat D has downwardly-extend 85 .spective view from Within of one of the paning bars J attached to it near its corners, the els K and adjacent parts. lower end of each of the said bars being pro- A designates the bottom of the vehiclevided withahead j, extendinginto the guidebody; B, its sides; 0, the front seat, having way F and under the upper plate thereof a forward-folding back 0, hinged at c, and D at the sides of its longitudinal slot, through 0 the rear seat. The front seat has on oppowhich the said rod passes, the said bars con- 40 site sides, near its bottom, two laterally-exstitnting the only means of attachment of the tending studs G which may project from the said seat D to the wagon-body. When the ends of a transverse bar or plate as shown rear seat D is moved forward, the heads, in Fig. 6, one stud being near each cornerand arms, or books j slide into the guideway F 5 entering a groove 1 of an upright supporting of panel G, and thence into the forward part plate or bar I, attached to the bottom or one of the guideway F until the rear seat D comes of the sides of the vehicle-body aforesaid. over the front seat 0, previously lowered, as Each of these grooves is for the most part verdescribed, after folding down the back 0, tical, but has a rearwardly-turned upperend and so takes its place, being then the only 100 1'. When the seat 0 is in use, as shown in seat of the vehicle in position for use. The Fig. 1, the studs are at the rearward ends vehicle is then adapted to be used by two perof these horizontal extensions t, so that the sons only, its rear part being available for weight of the seat comes on these supporting baggage, parcels, or any articles which there may be need to carry. The front end of each panel K is then held down by a pivoted catch 0, hooking under a stud below it on the inner face of the side of the wagon-body. When it is desired to convert it into a two-seated vehicle again, the procedure is reversed, the seat D being moved back into its rearward place, the panels I being freed and turned over forward into the position shown in Fig. 1, the catch E freed, permitting the springs H to raise the seat 0, and the studs being moved along into the rearward horizontal extensions 2' of the grooves I, so that the bars I support the seat 0 again, and the back 0 is turned up, as usual. If it should be accidentally jostled forward, bringing the studs over the vertical parts of the said slots, the
I springs II will cushion its fall; but the studs are made to fit the grooves closely enough to prevent this accidental displacement in any ordinary circumstances, and the backward pressure of the weight of the occupants of the seat will assist in holding it in place.
The rear seat is provided with a downwardly-extending casing K,which always protects the bars .I and also protects the bars I when said seat is moved over the lowered front seat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a vehicle-body having cut-away sides, a front seat adapted to descend within the said body, a rear seat adapted to slide over the same, and movable panels adapted to protect the space below the front seat when it is in use and to fill the recessed or cut-away parts of the sides at will substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a vehicle-body having cut-away sides, a front seat, supporting devices for the front seat permitting it to descen'd at will, panels hinged at their rear lower corners to the sides of the body and protecting said supports when the said seat is in use, but adapted to turn over back and fill-the recesses of the said cut-away sides, and a rear seat adapted to slide over the lowered front seat for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a vehicle-body having cut-away sides and guideways F, a rear seat provided with downwardly extending bars engaging the said guideways, a front seat adapted to be lowered within the said body, and reversible panels hinged to the said body and provided with guideway-sections F, which complete the guideway, to permit the rear seat to slide over the lowered front seat, the said panels protecting the supporting devices of the front seat when the latter is in position for use and the said panels are turned forward substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with a vehicle-body, a seat provided with lateral studs, supports provided with upright grooves receiving the said studs and bent horizontally at their upper ends and a spring or springs tending to replace or support the said seat substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a cut-away vehiclebody, a seat provided with lateral studs, supports provided with upright grooves receiving the said studs and bent horizontally at their upper ends, a spring or springs for replacing and'aiding in supporting the said seat, panels for protecting the said springs and supports, but movable to fill out the cutaway parts of the sides of the vehicle-body and a rear seat adapted to slide forward over the front seat after the latter is lowered substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with a vehicle-body, a spring-supported front seat adapted to be lowered within the same, a rear seat adapted to slide over the front seat when thus lowered, and hinged panels, which may be turned at will into position to protect the said springs, or to fill the recesses in the cut-away sides, substantially as set forth.
7. In combination with a cut-away Vehiclebody, a front seat adapted to be lowered within the same, supporting devices for the said seat, hinged panels protecting such devices, but adapted to be turned into position to fill out the cut-away parts of the sides instead, and a rear seat adapted to slide forward over the said front seat when the latter is lowered, the said rear seat being provided with an attachment for protecting the said supports substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 18th day of July, A. D. 1903.
MINAS H. KASHIAN.
