To a, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM ORUroHLow, a citizen of the United States, residingin Paterson, in the conntyof Passaie and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new andby the use of simple expedients highly-variegated patterns may be worked out in the goods to be woven.
My invention is found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- V Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of the end portion of a loom, showing my improved dobby in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a View substantially similar to Fig. 1 except that the parts are viewed fromthe opposite standpoint. Fig. 3 is a view of the dobby looking in the direction of the arrow in either Figs. 1 or 2, and Fig. 4 illustrates a modification of the invention.
On the loom-frame a is secured in any desired manner the dobby b. c designates the jacks, fulcrumed in the dobbyframe at d and pivoted to their jack-levers e in the usual Said jack-levers are adapted to be operatively connected with the knives f through the medium of upper and lower hooks g g, each corresponding upper and lower hook being connected by a rod 72, so as to work vertically together when the rod is actuated by a corresponding one of a set of levers t'. The knives are reciprocated in the usual manner from rocking levers j, to which they are connected bylinks 7c.
The indicator mechanism, which consists of the usual cylinderl and endless set of pattern-cards m, is carried by a bell-crank lever 11, fulcru med on a shaft 0 in the dobby-frame and actuated by a spring 39, which connects it with the frame of the loom, so that the in dicator mechanism normally tends to lower. It is elevated against the tension of the spring from a cam g on one of the rotary shafts r of the loom, the lever n carrying a roller .9, which engages the cam. The cylinder carries the usual ratchet t, with which at each movement of the indicator mechanism a spring-actuated pawl u coacts to turn the cylinder. The cylinder also carries the usual polygonal block 11, engaged by a spring-actuated lever 10 for intermittently holding the cylinder against turning.
Each pattern-card has a plurality of rows of pins or other projections 00 in relatively varied arrangement. 7 The needles y, which are actuated from these pins and in turn actuate the levers i, are arranged to slide vertically in the horizontal portion of a U shaped frame ,2, which I term a switch and which is suspended from pivots 1 on supportingarms 2, extending from the dobby-frame. According as this switch is shifted so as to bring the needles in alinement with the one or the other of the rows of pins as on the patterncards so different combinations of the levers t' are selected and actuated. The shifting of switch z is effected by the following mechanism:
Switch is normally pulled outwardly by a spring 3, connecting it with a fixed arm 4. Its limit of movement under the pull of the springis a stop 5 on the dobby-frame. When the switch is against the stop, the needles 3 will be opposed to one of the end rows of pins as on that card which is in operative position relatively to the needles. 6 is an actuating device for the switch in the form of a hook having its hooked portion stepped, as at 7, each step corresponding to one of the other rows of pins on each card. This hook is pivotally connected to the upper end of a lever B, fulcrumed on the shaft 0, and itis also pivotally connected to the upper end of a certain link 9. Lever 8 is continually oscillated from a face-plate 10 through the medium of a link 11, the face-plate being carried upon the upper end of a shaft 12, which is journaled in a part of the (lobby-frame and carries at its lower end a bevel-gear 13, engaging a bevel-gear 14 on a shaft 15, which carries a gear 16, meshing with a pinion 17 on the shaft 7'.
As lever 8 oscillates it causes the hook 6 reciprocate, and according as thishook is raised or lowered to any given extent so the one or the other of the steps 7 thereof is brought against the switch to move the same against the tension of its spring. The raising and lowering of hook 6 is accomplished through link 9 from a lever 18, which is ful-- crumed in a suitable support 19 and is connected with a lever 20 by means of a suitable elastic connection in the form of a rod 21, pivoted to the lever 20, another rod, 22, pivoted to the lever 18 and having a sliding engagement with the rod 21, and a spring 23, normally acting on the rods, so as to extend the connection which they constitute. Lever 20 is controlled from the balls or rolls 24 on a pattern-chain 25 of a suitable indicator mechanism 26.
In the modified form of the switch mechanism the switch 27 is guided in a slot 28 in the dobby-frame and is normally pulled outwardly by a spring 29. It is actuated from the book 6 in the same manner that that already described is actuated. Since, however, the switch in this instance slides, it becomes necessary to prevent its actuating means (the hook, which engages it only at one end) from disturbing its parallelism with reference to the pins cc, and this is accomplished by connecting it by links 30 with cranks 31 .on a rock-shaft 32, journaled in the dobby-frame.

Operation: It will be understood that levers j are rocked and shaft 1* rotated continuously, so that the jacks, which are selected from the indicator mechanism, are moved on their fulcrums to shift the harness and so that the indicator mechanism is moved not only to select the jacks to be moved, but so as to be caused to advance, and thus present a new card to the needles y at each movement. From pinion 17 lever 8 is kept also in continuous motion. Whenever the indicator mechanism is elevated, one of its rows of pins, depending upon the position of the switch 2, engages the needles y, which elevate the levers 2', corresponding thereto, whereby the hooks g g, controlling the jacks to be operated, are lowered into the position where they will be engaged by the knives. through the mechahism connecting lever 20 with hook 6, disposed book 6 where a given one of its steps will engage the switch. As the hook recedes it pulls the switch with it (provided, of course, the hook engages the switch at all) and at its rearward limit of motion will hold the needles at the point where when the new card is presented the predetermined row of pins will engage needles y. Just as the switch reaches its extreme rearward position roller 8 rides up on the highest portion of cam q and so forces the pattern-card presented against the needles, elevating them and levers t'. Thereupon roller 8 begins to run down on cam q, permitting the indicator mechanism to recede from the needles, while lever 8 advances, thus causing hook 6 to permit the switch to return to the stop. From this point on the operation is simply a repetition 'of that described.
The indicator mechanism 26 I preferably use to perform the double function of controlling the position of hook 6 and controlling levers 34, from which the boxes of the loom are called. As the calling of the boxes of a loom precedes the forming of the shed, it becomes necessary in the present case, where the same indicator mechanism works both the levers 20 and the levers 34:, to make some portion of the connecting mechanism between lever 20 and hook 6 elastic, so that whenever lever 20 acts to pull down on hook 6 while said hook is still engaged with the switch there will be a yielding effect produced in said connecting mechanism. It is for this reason that the flexible connection between levers 18 and 20, afforded by the parts 21, 22, and 23, is pro vided.
It should be understood that while the same general indicator mechanism 26 controls both the boxes and the forming of the sheds still the balls or rolls 24: are divided into two sets, one actuating levers 20 and the other levers 34. The controlling of the boxes and the forming of the sheds from the same indicator mechanism has been heretofore proposed; but the medium for accomplishing this was one of the levers 34. Hence because the variety of positions of this lever is so limited the number of different sheds capable of being formed is limited. By dividing the balls or rolls into two sets one of them can be made so that in combination with lever 20 any variety of sheds may be produced, while the other set does the more limited work of actuating the boxes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a support, jacks fulcru med in said support,knives,hooks adapted to be actuated by the knives, means for connecting the hooks and the jacks, movable hook-controlling devices, needles controlling said devices, an indicator mechanism coactive with the needles, a switch adapted to move the needles with reference to the indicator mechanism, agraduated part engageable with the switch and adapted to shift the same, means for imparting a regular movement to said graduated part, and means for adjusting said graduated part relatively to the switch, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a support, jacks fulcrumed in said support, knives, hooks adapt IIO ed to be actuated by the knives, means for connecting the hooks and the jacks, movable hook-controlling devices, needles controlling said devices, an indicator mechanism coactive with the needles, a switch adapted to move theneedles with reference to the indicator mechanism, a stepped part engageable with the switch and adapted to shift the same, means for imparting a regular movement to said stepped part, and means for adjusting said stepped part relatively to the switch, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a support, jacks fulcrumed in said support, knives, hooks adapted to be actuated by the knives, means for connecting the hooks and the jacks, movable hook-controlling devices, needles controlling said devices, an indicator mechanism coactive with the needles, a switch carrying the needles and movable with reference to the indicator mechanism, a stop, elastic means crumed in said support, knives, hooks adapted to be actuated by the knives, means for connecting the hooks and the jacks, movable hook-controlling devices, needles controlling said devices, an indicator mechanism coactive with the needles, a switch carrying the needles and movable with reference to the indicator mechanism, a graduated part engageable with the switch, adapted to shift the same, and movable both in the same direction as the switch and substantially -at right angles thereto, means for imparting a regular movement to said part in the direction of movement of the switch, and means for moving said part substantially at right angles to the direction of movement of the switch, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a support, jacks fulcrumed in said support, knives, hooks adapted to be actuated by the knives, means for connecting the hooks and the jacks, movable hook-controlling devices, needles controlling said devices, an indicator mechanism coactive with the needles, a switch carrying the needles and movable with reference to the indicator mechanism, a graduated part engageable with the switch and adapted to shift the same, means for imparting a regular movement to said graduated part, another indicator mechanism, and operative connecting means between said last-named indicator mechanism and the graduated part, said last named indicator mechanism being adapted to adjust the graduated part relatively to the switch, substantially as described.
