METHOD OF WEAVING INITIALS, NAMES, MONOGBAMS, do.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,579, dated November 17, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JULIUS LUCAS and OAR-L VORSTEHER, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Barmen, Rhenish Prussia,Germany, have invented a new and useful Method of Weaving Initials, Names, Monograms, and the Like, of which the followingis a specification.

Our invention refers to anew and improved method for imitating embroidered initials, monograms, and the like by weaving them on a piece of cloth and sewing said piece to underclothing, household linen, and the like, or by weaving said monograms in the fabric.

Our invention is particularly adapted for initials being woven in white material on a white ground, said initials having the advantage over such made according to the old weaving system that they cannot be pressed flat by washing and ironing and that they always remain in their elevated position, which is not the case with the method hitherto used.

In order to carry our invention into effect, we proceed as follows: The ground is woven as usual in taifeta or other suitable binding wherever it is not coveredby the figure. The warp-threads being covered by the figure are not bound with the weft-threads, as usual, but are lying loosely between the ground-weft and figure-weft or below both said weftthreads. If the figure-weft is then bound in the ground, the Warp-threads are drawn together, formingthus a cushion for the figure, which assumes then an elevated position, like hand embroidery, and Will remain so and not pressed flat by washing and ironing. In the same manner as the warp-threads are used for that purpose alsothe weft-threads may be treated in the sameway, and both threads may be partly bound in, partly left unbound, where covered by the figure.

In order to more fully set forth our invention, we have illustrated the same on the accompanying drawings, on which- Figure 1 shows a plan of the fabric. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on' the line the ground-bindin g.

In the manner described all names, monograms, combination-letters may be woven on pieces of cloth and then sewed to a fabric, or saidinitials may be directiy woven in a fabric White on white or colored on white, and such make will then be a full imitation of hand embroidery, which will be of the same Value, but cheaper and still more durable.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is- 1.
